About Don

I currently work with 11 home-schooled students aged 8-12 years old. and teach them hands-on science and to work as teams, emphasizing safety and teamwork. Currently, we are working on physical science concepts. In the past, we have built airplanes and catapults. We have also conducted activities to study sound and electricity. Emphasis is on experiencing an activity, recording results, and understanding the science behind the concept or activity. In the past, I have taught chemistry, biology, physics, and IPC, Emphasis is put on using readily available materials to relate physical and chemical concepts to everyday experiences. Students are encouraged to explore the concepts on their own and to research solutions to everyday problems. For example, when studying sound, students were taught how to create sounds, pitch, frequency, intensity, and everyday applications were modeled.
My science experiences are enhanced by my interests. I belong to the San Antonio Gem and Mineral Society and my hobbies include traveling. I have traveled to Japan, Spain, England, Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, Belize, and Canada. I love the outdoors. One of my favorite pastimes is wade fishing in the gulf coast bays. Bird-watching is a favorite activity. I enjoy collecting butterflies and love to hike in the green belt behind our home. When walking I am always looking for artifacts and other interesting things of nature. I have a hobby of collecting local cactus and enjoy taking pictures of wildflowers and identifying them. My Master Naturalist certification allows me the opportunity to volunteer in the community for nature projects.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
