About Scott

Why should you choose me as a tutor for your son or daughter? Let me begin by telling you that I was a substitute teacher in the Northeast Independent School District for two years where I worked at all levels, elementary, middle and high school. During my years as a substitute, I discovered my niche was working with students with special needs, and it was this that led me to my current position at Olmos Elementary as a special educator. In my current position, even though I am a special education co-teacher in the classroom, I work with all students in my classroom. I am able to form bonds and build relationships with all my students quickly and this helps me be able to push them harder to succeed. I am also a father of five children varying in ages from 6-18, so I know how to work with all ages and abilities. I am a certified teacher in the areas of EC-6 ESL and All Levels SPED, and I acquired my Bachelor's Degree in 1992 in Communication Studies from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. In 2009, I earned my Master's in Early Childhood Education from Texas State University.

My job as a tutor is not just to teach your son or daughter subject material, but it is also to build their self-confidence so that they can be successful in whatever path they may choose. For me, learning is a passion and a life-long pursuit. In my experiences as a teacher in the classroom as a co-teacher in the elementary school setting and as a substitute teacher, I have learned how vital it is to make learning fun. I strive to make each lesson engaging and fun, and I believe the best kind of learning happens when my students are not even aware they are learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have two years of teaching experience working with students who have ADD/ADHD, and I have a teaching certificate qualifying me as All Level Special Education which I obtained during my graduate studies at Texas State University. I also teach a Sunday school class which has several students with ADD, and my personality meshes well with these students. I know how to work with them and help them be successful. A student such as this simply cannot sit still for very long so frequent brain breaks are necessary, and it also is helpful if you let the student know what is needed so they can earn that break.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Besides my teaching certificate in All Level Special Education, I have had the privilege of working as an instructional aide in a pre-kindergarten class of students with autism toward the end of last school year. I also have two years experience working with students with autism during the time I was employed as a special education teacher in the Northeast Independent School District. Plus, I had ample opportunity to put into practice what I learned through my classes on autism while pursuing my Master's Degree at Texas State University. It is very true what they say about if you know one student with autism, then you know one student with autism because they are all different. What works with one student may or may not work with another. I also learned the importance of routine and how diverting from the routine can completely throw off a student with autism.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been certified by the state of Texas to teach EC-6 ESL classes, and I also have two years of substituting experience and two years of teaching experience working with the elementary grades. I also have been gainfully employed by Sylvan Learning as a teacher since April, 2015. When tutoring at Sylvan, I work with beginning readers (1st or 2nd grade) all the way to seniors in high school, primarily focusing on reading instruction, but I also teach elementary and middle school math as well.

Elementary Math

I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas State University, which qualifies me for elementary math.

Phonics

I have almost seven months experience teaching phonics in my current position at Sylvan Learning, and I am also currently tutoring a student in phonics outside of school to help her become better at reading and comprehension. I also have experience working with the SRA reading program as I worked with struggling fourth grade readers. Phonics instruction is the cornerstone to helping a child learn how to read. Children must know the letter-sound relationships to help them understand what they are reading.

Reading

I am a fully certified early childhood education teacher with over four years of experience teaching in the elementary grades. My teaching certifications are EC-6 ESL and All Level Special Education, and I obtained my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas State University.

Special Needs

Working with students with special needs is my passion, and one of the main reasons why I obtained my All Level Special Education teaching certificate. It is also why I chose to be a special education teacher the previous two years in the Northeast Independent School District. It was also why I pursued special education assignments in my two years of substituting. Working with special needs students requires a lot of patience and a positive attitude, and I believe I have both.

Study Skills

In my two years of substituting, two years of being a special education teacher, and my seven months of working as a teacher at Sylvan Learning, I have worked with countless numbers of students to help them improve their study skills. Sometimes, it can be as simple as having a student use a highlighter to draw attention to what is most important in the question, especially when working with word problems in mathematics. Other times, it can helping a student write down their homework in an organizer so they won't forget what assignment they need to complete. While other times, it can be helping a student make a note card so they can refer to it later.

Writing

I have written countless essays through my educational pursuits, obtaining first my Bachelor's Degree in 1992 and then my Master's Degree in 2010.
