About Mickey

I see it as my job to understand YOU, as a unique learner, and help open up your potential! With years of experience under my belt, both in the USA and abroad, I treat each student as an individual and tailor my lessons to the goals and learning style of the student. My students tell me they come away motivated to study and learn on their own, and say they have never had such rapid improvement as with me. My success speaks for itself: several of my students have gone from failing to getting A's within several months of working with me, and all my students have seen an improvement of their grades.

For English, Writing, ESL/ESOL, Spanish, and German:
I can help with homework, study skills, tests, projects, editing, and general skills improvement. I have also tutored students in an immersion setting, ie, baking/doing art projects/daily activities- a great option for children through adults who want to learn through natural language acquisition.

For Piano, Oboe, Music Theory:
I am a passionate and high-level music teacher, and have performed throughout North America, South America, and Europe as a soloist, orchestra member, and chamber musician. I have been the recipient of several music fellowships and have been awarded prizes throughout the USA. I can help you develop into a confident and competent artist on your instrument, with your diligent practice.

As a tutor, my goals are to:
1) Assess the student’s knowledge/skill base, learning styles, and advise where I feel he/she needs the most work.
2) Help you accomplish YOUR goals.
3) Develop an individualized learning plan based on the above. No student receives the same curriculum, as I don’t believe in cookie-cutter teaching.

See my experience and qualifications below.

English as a Second Language: My experience ranges from teaching ESL at Kaplan International College (current), English in Germany for several years in the public schools, teaching international students in Boston at the Boston Conservatory, teaching children English in Mexico, to completing a teaching internship in the English Language Learners (ELL) classrooms in the Shoreline Public Schools. I have taught both complete beginners to advanced speakers, in addition to the ages ranges of 6 to 48. I have had students from five continents of the world and I LOVE working with such diverse people! My ease with people allows shy personalities or cultures to open up and the atmosphere I aim to create is one of understanding and motivation.

German/Spanish: I started studying Spanish in 3rd grade, and continued through my college classes. At Whitworth University, I taught Spanish Live Labs (small classes to supplement main lecture Spanish courses) from my first semester on. In high school, I attained the highest marks (5) on the AP Spanish Exam, outperforming the native speakers due to my grasp of grammar and perfect accent. I know both what the AP test is looking for, and how to help others master those skills. I have also lived for several months in Latin America, as a translator and facilitator for Yucatan Helping Hands (Mexico), World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, Bolita (Costa Rica) and The Dreamer Hostel (Colombia).

I am fluent in German and lived in Germany for the last 2 years as an English and music teacher (I taught in the public schools IN German) and worked on several organic farms in various parts of the country. Additionally, I have tutored German grammar to elementary school children in Germany.

English/Reading/Writing: I have been a ghost writer and editor for National Seafood Educators, where my articles have been published in mainstream journals. I have done years of book/article/media editing and LOVE working with students on writing!

In 2011, I attained my Bachelor’s degree from The Boston Conservatory, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and member of Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Honor Society.

Most recently I was choir director of Chor auf dem Asterstein, in Koblenz, Germany, also teaching music in various schools throughout Germany. Previously I was principal oboe of the Lowell House Opera Orchestra, and have performed throughout the Boston area with various orchestras. I was a fellowship recipient of the Britten-Pears Young Artists Contemporary Performance in the Aldeburgh (England) Music Festival in 2009 and 2010. My Carnegie Hall debut was in 2008 with the National Collegiate Wind Ensemble, and I was a soloist with the Spokane Symphony, as prize-winner of the MusicFest Northwest Concerto Competition in 2009. During my studies at the Boston Conservatory, I was a highly sought-after tutor for music theory, music history, piano skills, and ear training.

I am currently teaching piano, flute and oboe at Saint Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Texas.

My other interests include backpacking, nature, running, ultimate Frisbee, other cultures, cooking, reading, and watercolor painting.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
