About David

Dear Student or Parent:

Maybe you feel intimidated or left-behind in physics, or in calculus, algebra or other math. May I help you?

I have B.S. degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Texas, and now after 25 years of experience in industry as a software developer, I bring you an additional 12+ years of experience as a professional tutor.

I bring to you strong communication skills, in both technical and non-technical subjects, with an eagle-eye for detail, consistency and accuracy, and an aptitude for presenting difficult concepts clearly. I am skilled at diagnosing the roots of my students' misunderstandings, patient with the learning process, and welcome all your questions.

Over the years, I have learned which concepts predictably give students the most trouble in math and physics and have developed special, paced techniques to help you through those. With me, you will move at a pace that is best for your learning and will soon join those who ask, "Why couldn't my professor explain it like that?"

For convenience, I can meet you face-to-face or with online tutoring using a combination of whiteboard and telephone. You will also find me very flexible with time.

About online tutoring -- it is really no different than face-to-face -- either way, the student and tutor are sharing a writing surface (computer screen or piece of paper) and talking personally (on the phone or at a tutoring table). It also has the benefits that, with the whiteboard I use, class assignments can be uploaded directly to the whiteboards and all lessons are saved for the student's future review at no charge.

Finally, if you appreciate financial incentives, you will want to know about my money-saving offers. First, I offer group discounts: 2 students together each get 25% off, and 3 students each get 40% off. Second, I offer referral benefits: if another student tells me that you sent them, and you are the first one to refer them to me, you will get 1 free hour after that other student has tutored with me for a total of 5 hours.

I look forward to working with you!

Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

If you have your own study guide, I will be glad to help you in the math portion of the ACT test.

You will find me very able to tutor for this test as I have helped secondary school and university students with math for over 10 years. I have also tutored physics for most of that time and for the same institutions and educational levels. In support of this, I have B.S. degrees in math (with honors) and physics from the University of Texas.

I look forward to going through this preparation with you!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is so very important to any further progress you will make in mathematics that I urge you to learn absolutely as much as you can in this subject.

I have seen many, many students struggling painfully in Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Calculus, and more advanced subjects just because they have a poor foundation in this one. I have tutored all these other subjects extensively, and I know which topics in Algebra 1 you will need most later.

I am also skilled at sensing the real issues behind your questions and will lead you steadily to the mastery of this subject you need. I look forward to working with you!

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is vital to your success in any future math.

To avoid struggling painfully in Precalculus, Calculus, and more advanced subjects, you must have a good foundation in this one. I have tutored more advanced subjects quite a bit, and I know which topics in Algebra 2 you will be glad you learned if you take these other subjects.

With me, you will not be afraid to ask your questions, and I look forward to working with you until you have mastered what you need from this course!

ASVAB

I am prepared to tutor students who have their own study guide in the Math portion of the ASVAB test (not in any other part of the test).

My preparation to effectively tutor students in this test includes studies at the University of Texas by which I earned the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and the Bachelor of Science in Physics, and ~10 years of privately tutoring public school and college students in Mathematics and Physics.

I am familiar with some of the ASVAB preparatory material on the Internet and would have no problem preparing you for the Math portion.

I look forward to working with you and helping you to succeed in this test!

C

I am prepared to tutor students in the C Programming Language. My preparation to effectively tutor students in this test includes:

1. 5 years of programming in C for The IBM Corporation, in support of the Advanced Instruction Executive (AIX) Operating System,

2. 5 years of programming in C for The University of Texas Applied Research Labs, in support of ASW underwater acoustics research,

3. 7 years of programming in scientific FORTRAN for geophysical research and for the University of Texas.

I look forward to working with you and helping you to learn this subject!

Calculus

I probably tutor this course more than any other.

Calculus is basic to any study of more advanced math, so plan to study hard and get a good foundation in it! If you go on and take Differential Equations or other, more advanced subjects you will thank yourself and avoid lots of difficulty (and tutoring!) if you get a good foundation in Calculus. I do tutor more advanced courses, and I know what you will need for them. Ask all the questions you want; I am glad to answer them and I will never make you feel like you shouldn't have asked.

Students have trouble with Calculus both because of the difficulty of the subject itself and because they have an inadequate foundation in the prerequisites -- Algebra, Trigonometry and Precalculus. I will help you with the daunting task of catching up on these prerequisites while simultaneously coping with the concepts and applications of Calculus itself.

It's a challenge, but let's face it together and get it done!

Differential Equations

My studies at the University of Texas, by which I earned the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (with a grade of 4.0 = A in Differential Equations) and the Bachelor of Science in Physics, as well as ~10 years of tutoring since, have all afforded ample opportunity for me to gain and prove proficiency in the subject of Differential Equations and in courses more advanced as well.

You will need a good Calculus background to succeed in Differential Equations. I have tutored this course on many occasions through the years and am well-prepared to guide you through it if you feel like you are lacking the Calculus background, or if the subject of Differential Equations is at all challenging to you.

I look forward to working with you!

Elementary Math

You will need the skills of elementary math in daily living as well as for any more advanced math courses you may take.

I have seen many, many students struggling painfully in Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and more advanced subjects just because they have a poor foundation in this one. I have tutored all these other subjects extensively, and I know which topics you will need most later.

I am also skilled at sensing the real issues behind your questions and will lead you steadily to the mastery of this subject you need. I look forward to working with you!

Fortran

FORTRAN ("FORmula TRANslator") was one of the first of the more "human-readable" computer programming languages that relieved people from having to learn assembly language.

FORTRAN programmers need much of the same logical thinking skills as those used for other languages, and knowledge of it will allow you to work any of the applications, especially scientific ones, that still use it.

The exposure to the logical thinking skills needed for FORTRAN will also hone your ability in other, more recent, high-level languages.

GED

I am prepared to tutor students who have their own study guide in the Math portion of the GED test (not in any other part of the test).

My preparation to effectively tutor students in this test includes studies at the University of Texas by which I earned the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and the Bachelor of Science in Physics, and ~10 years of privately tutoring public school and college students in Mathematics and Physics.

I look forward to working with you and helping you to succeed in this test!

Geometry

Tutoring in this subject will prepare you for trigonometry, calculus and physics. It will also develop your thinking and reasoning skills as you do proofs. I tutor trigonometry, calculus and physics, and I do see students who are glad that they know their geometry. I will make you feel welcome to ask your questions, and together, we will get you through this course!

Physics

This course will test your real-world understanding. As its name implies, success at physics requires physical perception, mathematical skill, and the ability to combine these two. I have long experience navigating students through this challenging process and I enjoy tutoring this subject more than any other.

I am glad to answer your questions, and I will never make you feel like you shouldn't have asked. If you are intimidated by physics, contact me soon, and we'll get started!

Prealgebra

If you plan to take Algebra or even more advanced mathematics courses, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting a good foundation, and this course is it. The skills of Prealgebra will serve you well in all later courses, as well as keeping your thinking skills alive and well.

I tutor more advanced Algebra and other courses, and I have watched many students have a very hard time with those because they did not lay the foundations in this course. I can help you to focus on what you will need in those later courses.

Ask all the questions you want; I will be glad to answer them and I will never make you feel sorry you asked. I look forward to helping you lay your foundations well!

Precalculus

I know of no course that is a more important prerequisite to the courses that follow it than Precalculus is to Calculus. I have tutored Calculus for years and have seen people struggle painfully because of an inadequate Precalculus background. Most either let too much time elapse between their Precalculus and Calculus courses, or simply did not do well enough at Precalculus. This is a very important course, and I invite you to let me help you do as well as you possibly can in it!

SAT Math

I will be glad to help you in the Math portion of the SAT test (not in any other part of the test) if you have your own study guide.

I have B.S. degrees in math (with honors) and physics from the University of Texas, and I have been privately tutoring public school and college students for approximately 10 years.

Together, we can get you ready for this test!

TAKS

I am prepared to tutor students in the math portion of the TAKS test (not in any other part of the test). My preparation to effectively tutor students in this test includes:

1. Studies at the University of Texas, by which I earned the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and the Bachelor of Science in Physics,

2. ~10 years of privately tutoring public school and college students in mathematics and physics

3. One year as a tutor hired by the Lockhart, TX school district specifically to tutor high school students in the math portion of the TAKS test.

I look forward to working with you and helping you to succeed in this test!

Trigonometry

This course might be the most useful of all your math courses. Trigonometry can be used to solve practical problems and is also essential to success at Calculus and courses beyond.

I tutor Precalculus and Calculus and very frequently see people wishing very much that they had a good Trigonometry background.

I look forward to answering every question you may have, without making you feel like you shouldn't have asked, as we work through your Trigonometry course together!
