About Jonathan

I remember that when I was a young student, I had immense trouble with only a few subjects. If I were placed in a history classroom, I could relate all the pertinent facts concerning the American Revolution. English language arts was a similar story. But, put me in a math classroom, and, at the time, I couldn't tell you up from down or left from right. I knew the basics of arithmetic well enough, but when they threw in formulas and variables, I was completely lost. That is, until I got some help from a teacher who was actually willing to sit down with me and figure out what the issue was. As it turned out, I was merely overcomplicating the issue, adding extra steps without purpose. When we discovered that that was the problem, I was so very relieved and felt a real sense of empowerment.

Now, I want to bring that same sense of relief and empowerment to you or your child. I honestly believe that there is no such thing as a subject that can't be grasped. We just need to work to find the way that you or your student can learn, and I am more than willing to accompany you/them on that journey.

As to my experience, I have been tutoring various subjects for nearly ten years. In 2014, I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies with a minor in English from the University of the Incarnate Word. While there, my studies in my field were focused primarily in Biblical Studies and American Catholic Studies. Before then, I was a distance learner at Texas State University majoring in History with minors in Geography, Political Science, and Education, but chose to quit that path for personal reasons. In 2010, I was awarded an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from San Antonio College. Since my graduation from Incarnate Word, I graduated Cum Laude from the Mexican American Catholic College and received a second Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in Philosophy. I am now pursuing a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and Theology at Oblate School of Theology and a Sacred Theology Baccalaureate degree from Ottawa University.

While I want to accompany you or your student on the journey towards understanding, I am currently only accepting students online because of my rigorous schedule of work and study. In general, my availability is open in the afternoons, except Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, but I can be flexible, if necessary, for serious students. (Please note that because of my schedule, I do not accept emergency appointments for new students, i.e. trying to schedule an appointment one day or less in advance, and I require two days advance notice of any cancellations. This is a hard policy that bears no exceptions.)

If you're ready to take the first step to understanding, I'm prepared to help, and I look forward to your call.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Before I earned my BA in Religious Studies, I was a History major. As such, I am trained in this subject at the university level, having taken multiple classes and not including my (ongoing) independent study of the subject matter since my childhood. I am better versed in pre-WWI America, but I do still have a better than working understanding of modern American history.

Anatomy

I have had a love affair with Anatomy Studies since I was young, even considering a Pre-Med major before I settled on History. In any case, I have a better than working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and would be able to help you in your level 1 and 2 studies.

Astronomy

Astronomy is an avocation of mine, and has been since childhood, that I don't mind sharing. This being said, my experience in the subject is elementary, i.e. I can help you with the basics.

Classics

My understanding in this field is primarily focused on the history of the Classical World, including the Latin language, the great Classical authors and poets, the philosophy of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and the effects of that world through time and place. (Please note that my philosophical training at the Mexican American Catholic College under the tutelage of Arnold Ibarra, Ph.D. and Christine Morkovsky, CDP, Ph.D. and was based on the work of Frederick Copelstone, SJ. As such, I am capable of tutoring most students in this area, but tend to take a more conservative approach.)

Economics

My experience in this subject is college-level, but elementary. If you need help in a high-school level or college-level 101 type course, I can help.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a history and education double-major before my current major. As such, I had begun to work on my field study for my state teacher's certificate, gaining the first hours needed with a 5th grade class at Rhodes Elementary.

English

English language arts has always been a passion of mine, and is one of the first subjects in which I started tutoring. With the advent of a more globally connected world, it becomes more and more important for non-English speakers to learn the language and for English speakers to remember or learn the rudiments of the language to be able to accurately portray themselves in the world we share. That's where I come in. If you feel the need to improve your language skills, please message me; I can help!

European History

Before I earned my BA in Religious Studies, I was a History major. As such, I am trained in this subject at the university level, having taken multiple classes and not including my (ongoing) independent study of the subject matter since my childhood. I am better versed in pre-WWI Western Europe, but I do still have a better than working understanding of modern European history.

Government & Politics

I have had a lifelong interest in Government and Politics, even considering a run for political office at one point. In addition to my avocational tendency towards the subject matter, I have studied it extensively at the university level, taking classes in Constitutional jurisprudence, international relations, public policy, and campaign finance. I have also worked on a few local campaigns and several causes, and am therefore also familiar with electioneering and lobbying. As a result, I have a full understanding of the topic from several perspectives, both within and without, and I hope that I will be able to share my knowledge with you.

Philosophy

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry with concentration and specialization in Philosophy from the Mexican American Catholic College (class of 2016). While there, I was under the tutelage of Arnold Ibarra, Ph.D. (an alumnus of the University of Navarra in Spain), Jan Klak, Ph.D. (an alumnus of the Angelicum in Rome), Bernadette O'Connor, Ph.D. (an alumna of University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio), and Christine Morkovsky, CDP, Ph.D. (an alumna of Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio). My ancient and medieval philosophical surveys were based on the work of Frederick Copelstone, SJ, and my modern and contemporary surveys were colored through the lens of Bernard Lonergan, SJ, as was my epistemology subject survey. All other subject surveys (logic, metaphysics, anthropology, natural theology, and ethics) were largely based in Aristotelian Scholasticism. As such, I am capable of tutoring most students in this area but tend to take a more conservative approach.

Religion

I hold a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of the Incarnate Word (class of 2014). During my years of study, I chose to focus on Biblical Studies and American Catholic Studies. I am also concurrently pursuing a Master's of Divinity and a Master's of Arts in Theology and Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in Scripture from Oblate School of Theology, and an STB (Sacred Theology Baccalaureate) from Ottawa University.

Social Studies

Social Studies is the general subject area encompassing the social sciences, like Sociology, Psychology, Cultural Anthropology, Political Science, and Geography (both Cultural and Physical), and the civil arts, as I call them, like, History and the Classics.

Sociology

I can help with your Sociology 101 type courses, helping you to understand the vocabulary, as well as, fundamental ideas and theories from key personalities. My studies have been focused on the key theories of Functionalism, Conflict Theory, Structural Functionalism, and Symbolic Interactionism, with an emphasis on the roles of deviance and stratification on societies.

Swimming

My experience is focused on beginner to intermediate levels of ability. I have worked with the Boy Scouts of America as an Aquatics Instructor for the beginner's level and Lifeguard since 2006, and will work with you or your child with the same level of care and professionalism. I don't teach or coach for competition, just getting started on and perfecting the fundamentals.

Theater

I have 5 years experience in theatrical arts (both acting and tech), and at one time it was even my second major. I have been a member of the International Thespian Society, and the San Antonio Theatre Coalition. Admittedly, I have teched on more plays and events than acted, but I feel that has not diminished my abilities in either. I have played roles like Uncle John in "Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath", "Mark Renton" in an interpretation of Irving Welsh's "Trainspotting", a piece I still use for auditions, and a Serbian soldier in an one-act play written for National History Day based on events from the Bosnian War. I have also done Dramatic Interpretation of a passage by Horace at a Latin language conference. As for the technical side, I have worked as various sorts of grips (curtain, property, etc.), stage crew, and as a lighting, and sound technician (though never as a rigger or electrician). Notable events include talent shows, pageants, and plays like "Disney's Beauty and the Beast", "Love Rides the Rails", and "Camelot".
