My name is Cheryl, and I have about 20 years of teaching experience. I graduated from West Texas State University in 1984, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English and Health Education. It was science, as opposed to arts, because I had at one time wanted to be a veterinarian and had taken more science courses in college than arts courses. In 2002, when I received my Masters in Education degree, I became a certified Learning Resource Specialist, which is a fancy name for "school librarian." I have taught grades pre-k through high school and also have spent time as an adult literacy volunteer. As well, I have spent many years tutoring both, elementary and secondary students. When tutoring elementary school students, I employ a variety of teaching tools to accommodate a variety of learning styles. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, I use flashcards, games, and other visual and hands-on teaching aids to help students achieve learning success. I love teaching and I love learning. My goal with any and all students is to make each one a lifetime reader and learner.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have a lot of games and techniques for helping elementary school kids learn basic math concepts, such as subtraction with regrouping, addition with regrouping, money facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, word problems, fractions, and more. I am most skilled in teaching elem. math to grades 1-4, both as a former elem. teacher and as a tutor.

Full of great ideas and fun

Cheryl was able to guide us to help our daughter learn concepts in math and reading. She made it fun, was generous with her knowledge and materials and I'll gladly use her again.

Confidence Builder!

My child hated math. Her confidence was so low that she refused to even guess at an answer. As she was only 7, this was quite concerning. Knowing that I lacked both skill and patience I began a search for someone who not only had the experience, but the gentleness and patience to encourage my daughter on her journey in finding her own capabilities. Cheryl is a treasure! It is obvious that she has had many years experience in teaching children. She allows my daughter to express herself and be playful even while keeping her on task. Each week my daughter cheers when she knows her tutor is coming. Miss Cheryl has made math fun by providing many games that promote learning. She also works hard to find more resources and methods to continue growth and encouragement. I feel confident that if any other subjects become a concern we have a great resource and friend in Miss Cheryl.

Supported Project Work

Ms. Cheryl helped my son with his project, which required her to work longer hours to get him ready to present his project. She went above and beyond to make sure that he was prepared. We are so thankful that she is working with our son and has formed such a great relationship with him.

Thank you! I enjoy working with such a bright young man!

Patient and Consistant

My son really enjoys learning from Miss Cheryl. We have seen much improvement in his writing, but more importantly in his attitude about writing. Thank you Cheryl for your patience and consistency.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your kind words. I love working with your son, as he is so eager to learn.

Great Tutor

Cheryl is the tutor for my two boys one 8 year old and one 10 year old both of which have ADHD and were several reading levels behind in school. Since they started tutoring with Cheryl both have made huge improvements in their reading levels and are now able to remain in there class all day as opposed to having to leave the classroom for one on one teaching like they have since they started school. In addition both have made great improvements in math as well as all other classes. She has found ways to motivate both of my boys to work and for the first time in their lives they are excited about reading and look forward to going to the library or book store.
