Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been a Christian since the age of eighteen and, since that time, have been a student of the Bible for the past almost thirty-two years. I have studied the Bible in personal Bible studies as well as through the church and through various Bible classes. Also, as a teacher in Christian schools for 10 years, I taught Bible classes to elementary school students as well as to high school students.

Elementary (K-6th)

My name is Cheryl, and I have about 20 years of teaching experience. I graduated from West Texas State University in 1984, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English and Health Education. It was science, as opposed to arts, because I had at one time wanted to be a veterinarian and had taken more science courses in college than arts courses. In 2002, when I received my Masters in Education degree, I became a certified Learning Resource Specialist, which is a fancy name for "school librarian." I have taught grades pre-k through high school and also have spent time as an adult literacy volunteer. As well, I have spent many years tutoring both, elementary and secondary students.
When tutoring elementary school students, I employ a variety of teaching tools to accommodate a variety of learning styles. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, I use flashcards, games, and other visual and hands-on teaching aids to help students achieve learning success. I love teaching and I love learning. My goal with any and all students is to make each one a lifetime reader and learner.

Elementary Math

I have a lot of games and techniques for helping elementary school kids learn basic math concepts, such as subtraction with regrouping, addition with regrouping, money facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, word problems, fractions, and more. I am most skilled in teaching elem. math to grades 1-4, both as a former elem. teacher and as a tutor.

English

For grades 6 - graduate school: English grammar, vocabulary building, sentence structure, syntax, writing and editing compositions, essays, research papers and dissertations.
On the elementary level: Language arts, spelling, vocabulary, reading, phonics
Adults: reading and literacy

Grammar

I am a Texas certified teacher. My certification is for Secondary (Middles School and High School English Language Arts) and for Elementary School (all subjects). Not only do I have experience teaching all grade levels from kindergarten to high school, but I also have experience as a professional freelance editor. As a freelance editor, I edited book manuscripts, college term papers and theses, and a variety of other types of writing. I edited for grammar, punctuation, syntax, and other mechanics of writing. I also have experience as an adult literacy tutor.

Reading

I am a Texas certified teacher with certification for teaching Elementary school (all subjects) and Secondary school (English Language Arts). I also have certification to be a school librarian. I have taught reading in grades 1-12 and have experience volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. My teaching/tutoring experience spans almost 30 years, and most of that has been with grades k-5.

Great tutor.

My son used to rush through his school work in class and that resulted in poor grades; Cheryl has taught him skills that he chooses to use in class to slow down and take his time. He tells when he follows her advice and the positive outcome. My son is ADHD and she is helping him live positively with it. And she has been a great resource for me, the technologically-challenged parent, as we've trans
