About Karen

Want to UNDERSTAND those stats tests in your class or for your project? Want help with your dissertation or thesis? If you are stuck learning SPSS or SAS, I can help.

I find research fun and make stats simple, working mostly with grad students who seek me out for thesis research +/or their classes. I apologize for it, but stats classes often are not taught well in understandable language. Social work or psychology students are common, but of course I am open to whatever kind of program you are in. Various students also have been in business, linguistics, auditory processing, and medicine. Statistics is pretty much the same regardless of the content area.

I’ve been tutoring and teaching since 1985 when I received my master's degree in biostatistics at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Then I received a master's in epidemiology from Columbia University in 1992. I've been doing this for a long time and I continue because I enjoy it. Explaining statistics in regular, lay language so that people can understand it and apply it is fun for me.

There is a ton of new terminology in statistics - fortunately I am bilingual and can guide you through what it all means. The funny looking symbols are just shorthand that tells you what to do with the numbers. I can show you that too.

Many classes also call on you to use SPSS or SAS to run analyses. Indeed, you’ll want to have the computer do most of the work instead of doing it by hand. But it’s one more thing to master. Learning SPSS with me is kind of like driver’s ed, where you are learning but there’s someone right there to show you how to do each step.

You may be overwhelmed with the whole concept of statistics, or simply want to more fully understand the material. In either case, contact me for a FREE phone consultation (once you are a registered student with WyzAnt). It doesn't cost a penny to talk to me and explore how we might work together to meet your needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

I have been doing statistical work for over 25 years, so I am quite solid. I have a master's degree in biostatistics and have been tutoring for many years. Let me know how I can assist you in your project or class.

SAS

SAS is one of several software packages I use for statistical analysis. If you know another package, converting to SAS can be a bit challenging. It is like another language in how the logic is presented, so getting some help for learning it can be quite helpful. Once you know it, it's VERY POWERFUL. I love using SAS! I especially love the ability to use their MACRO language to shorten routine algorithms that you are going to do a lot of. This can be VERY HANDY.

SPSS

I have been using and teaching SPSS for 30 years. We go step by step through each procedure. Once someone shows you how to do it, SPSS is demystified and actually becomes a handy tool.

Wonderful tutor!! Worth every penny. — I am a graduate student with a limited income who needed help with my Probability and Statistics class. Because of this, I initially sought the help of tutors who charged less. What I found was that these people usually either didn't know their subject or didn't know how to teach, in some cases both. They also often lacked those qualities that characterize true professionals. There is truth to th ...
