Bio

I am a certified secondary teacher with over 15 years experience teaching and tutoring a wide variety of subjects and ages. I have a degree in English from Southern Methodist University with a specialization in Creative Writing. I also have a minor in education. In addition to my outstanding abilities in English, I have a great deal of training in helping students prepare for a variety of tests like the GED and ACT. I am a certified secondary teacher with over 15 years experience teaching and tutoring a wide variety of subjects and ages. I have a degree in English from Southern Methodist University with a specialization in Creative Writing. I also have a minor in education. In addition to my outstanding abilities in English, I have a great deal of training in helping students prepare for a variety of tests like the GED and ACT. And even though my degree is in English, I am an excellent Math teacher. In fact, I made a 100 in Algebra when I was in high school. What makes me a great tutor is my ability to connect with my students, to hear what they have to say, and to determine the best teaching strategy to help them learn the given material. I take a light hearted approach to learning, understanding that when students enjoy what they are studying, they are much more likely to retain the material. Even though I have a great sense of humor and like to lighten my session with a little levity, I take learning seriously and do everything I can to make sure students not only learn but also master their material.

I have created five of my own web sites as well as helping three other people design, write, and edit their web pages. I know basic HTML code as well as programs like FrongPage and iWeb on both IBM and Mac platforms. In addition, I know how students can post both blogs and web pages at a variety of free sites on the Internet. For the past five years, I have been teaching a web page design summer camp for students ranging in age from 11-17 years old at the SMU-In-Legacy campus. In this class, I teach students the basics of good web page design - from choosing good color and graphics to creating relevant links. In addition, I explain to students the basic steps necessary to get their web pages up and running with a server. This class is very popular, and I often teach 4-5 full sections of 22 students in each class. I believe the ability to create web pages is an important skill people need to master so that they will be able to communicate and market themselves, their services, and products in today's competitive global economy.

I played soccer for over 25 years. In high school I was named first team all district defender for two consecutive years. I also was chosen to participate on the first women's team that Southern Methodist University ever had when I was a junior attending college there. I have coached high school girls soccer in San Angelo, Texas, leading the team to the playoffs the first year it was in existence. I have also taught numerous soccer classes for youngsters at Audubon Recreation Center as a part of Garland Parks and Recreation. I love soccer, and I love kids, so I believe I would be an excellent tutor for someone who wants to develop his/her skills in this area.

I am interested in helping students prepare for the TAKS test. I am a certified teacher in both Math and English, and I have several years of experience helping students pass the TAKS. I can help students with all the different subject areas from Reading and Math to Writing, Science, and Social Studies. In the past I have assisted a wide range of students from 3rd graders all the way up to high school students who needed to pass the TAKS EXIT level exam in order to graduate. I have a very successful track record based on helping students understand the best taking strategies as well as improving their knowledge in the various subject areas.

Melanie, patiently worked and walked our child through her homework. This was a first lesson for her outside of school, so there was some anxiety about how it would all work and it was super easy, and our child is ready to return.
