About Elaine

Hello! I'm a 28 year-old with a teaching certificate from Texas State University. I have a master's in computer science from Texas State as well and got my bachelor's from Washington University in St Louis.

Though my degrees are in CS, I also have a strong background in math and sciences, and even do some creative writing every once in a while. I've TA'd, subbed, and helped out students of all ages, including my peers.

I've loved math ever since I was young, and have helped out classmates with it from early on. One of the basic tenants of math in my mind is that if you're having too hard a time with it, there's probably a better way. I will try as many ways as needed to help a student learn this as well, so they can find math interesting rather than intimidating. I like to take a similar approach with other subjects as well. When you find a subject interesting, you learn more easily, and remember more as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had ADHD myself, since I was very young. I've developed ways to help myself get work done well, and can apply these to my students. I know exactly the sort of things they're going through, so I can be patient and understanding. I also have studied information about the condition. I am pursuing post-baccalaureate teacher certification at Texas State in San Marcos.

C

I've taken graduate level classes that require me to program in this language. I've also worked on an engine for a videogame company which was coded in C++, a superset of C.

C++

I've worked on the back end of an engine for a video game company based in St Louis. It was written in C++. I both added functionality and made fixes.

Computer Engineering

I have both a bachelor's and a master's in computer science, as well as a bachelor's in computer engineering. I've also had graduate courses in software engineering.

Computer Programming

I have both a bachelor's and a master's in computer science. I have taken many courses in different languages (primarily C/C++ and Java), and passed them. I have also worked some as a programmer for companies such as Simutronics and Hewlett Packard.

Discrete Math

Discrete math, including set algebra and logic, is often used in the more theoretical parts of computer science. I have taken such courses and done well in them, as well as informally tutoring fellow students. I've learned set theory and other such things starting in middle school, so I am thoroughly familiar with it all.

Logic

I first began learning formal logic in 6th grade. I've since seen and used it in my classes. It's important in computer science as a form of verification of programs that are correct, as an alternate approach to simply testing and fixing.

Brilliant and Fun!

I'm an adult with a job as a SQL Server programmer. I was in the middle of converting string formatting, previously done in SQL, to a faster process using RegEx in C# in SSIS. I got stuck on the some RegEx problems I needed to solve, as I'm new RegEx. In just one hour, Elaine helped me solve all my toughest remaining puzzles. I went to work the next day and implemented her solutions. She made
