About Jason

For those who need help with the upcoming STAAR tests, I added this paragraph to the top...
I am uniquely qualified to help your student. In addition to my past teaching experience, I have worked as a scorer and scorer supervisor for Pearson, scoring the written portions of the EOC tests among others. Since August, I have taught a special English EOC intervention class at a local high school. My students were almost all seniors, most of whom had failed to pass one or both of the two English tests multiple times. Statewide, in any of the typical retesting sessions, around one-third of students pass the test. Almost 90% of the seniors in my classes passed the December retests and have finally removed that crucial obstacle to their imminent graduation. It's just a matter of learning, understanding, and practicing the best strategies to use on test day.

From elementary grades to college level, I am eager to put my extensive teaching experience and academic background to use in crafting highly effective tutorials for you or your student!

Whether the student’s needs are in mastering the course content or in developing effective reading and writing skills, I can help with both. The short-term goal may be a better grade in the class or a higher test score; I will help any student achieve not only that, but become a better learner for life.

I have over a decade of classroom teaching and tutoring experience across a range of grade levels including middle school, high school, and college. My first expertise is in English language arts and literacy instruction: reading, writing, and test preparation. I also have extensive experience in teaching various social studies courses, including geography, U.S. government, and U.S. history. In addition, I have some experience with IB curriculum.

I'm comfortable tutoring in any subject area up to the middle school level and the abovementioned subjects at high school or college level. I am flexible in scheduling and traveling and will work with you to get the best learning, preparation, and results possible!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

In addition to a bachelor's degree in English and graduate coursework in literature and professional writing, I have taught literature and composition, as well as spelling and grammar, at the middle-school level for 5+ years and on the college level for three semesters as well.

Writing

I have completed several writing courses, including creative, persuasive, and technical writing. I have taught English language arts in middle school and introductory composition courses in college, as well as Business Writing. I wrote for a major university newspaper and have continued to write for myself as well as help edit others. I genuinely enjoy helping others improve their writing and learning from others to improve my own!
