About Josilyn

I have a degree in physics and am certified to teach high school math, physics and chemistry. I work part-time as a math tutor for students grades K-12 at a Mathnasium Learning Center. I have been tutoring there for four years now. I've also worked as a math tutor at Eastfield College and an undergraduate teaching assistant for Calculus III at my university. During my time at my university, I gained several hours of teaching experience within the UTeach program offered exclusively to STEM majors.

I plan to be a high school and college physics teacher in the future. I like math and physics because I find it fascinating we are able to describe, measure, and predict the actions of the universe with math.

My teaching method incorporates Socratic questioning to probe students' current knowledge and help them find a higher understanding. I also like to go over definitions and concepts related to the topics at hand as a point to build upon. You'll also never see me teaching without pictures and colors.

I would be most comfortable meeting in a coffee shop or library, but I am open to suggestions. I am available within two hours of contact. I would be happy to print resources for our meeting as long as I know what subject and topic you're looking to study.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have worked with several SAT and ACT students in the past three years at the math learning center I work at. I have found that taking SAT or ACT practice tests and focusing on weak topics in algebra and/or geometry helps students prepare for their exam.

Algebra 1

I have tutored algebra I students for 3 years at a math tutoring center. My degree in physics gave me much experience working with several levels of math.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring algebra II for the past four years at Mathnasium and I have tutored college algebra at Eastfield College.

Calculus

I have tutored Calculus I, II, and III as a math tutor at Eastfield College and an undergraduate teaching assistant at University of Texas at Dallas. I frequently used calculus throughout courses from my major in physics.

Physics

I have a degree in physics and am certified to teach physics and chemistry. Last summer I taught a 6-week course in physics for the enrichment of middle and high school students in the Dallas Independent School District.

Precalculus

I have tutored precalculus students for 3 years at a math tutoring center. My degree in physics gave me much experience working with several levels of math, including precalculus.

SAT Math

I have worked with several SAT and ACT students in the past three years at the math learning center I work at. I have found that taking SAT or ACT practice tests and focusing on weak topics in algebra and/or geometry helps students prepare for their exam.

STAAR

In the past I have created learning plans and worksheets based on the math Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for third grade through algebra I. I have the students take a past STAAR test and tutor them in the specific TEKS that the missed questions relate to using online worksheets and past STAAR questions.
