University of St.Thomas (Pre-med Psychology)
I'm a 23 year old grad of St. Thomas. I majored in Pre-med and have a bachelor's degree in Psychology. I am also currently pursuing my goal of obtaining a second degree in Chemical Engineering, after deciding that pre-med was not the route for me. My experience in teaching stems from assisting my younger sister who is special ed and needs individualized attention that she can't get in a classroom setting. This personal experience will help me to recognize which teaching style will work best for a student.
I also serve as a Medical Scribe for ER physicians in the emergency room which has taught me to be organized and work efficiently while multi-tasking. I've come to realize through my past work and personal experiences, that everyone learns differently and this has given me the ability to adapt to various learning styles whether it be interactive or visually. Because I've had to adopt a myriad of studying techniques, I can sympathize with how frustrating it can be to adjust to new classes, and I can bring my experience and advice with how to cope with it. My personal characteristics that I believe make me a great tutor include patience, being organized, focused, and timeliness.
The subjects that I feel comfortable tutoring in are algebra, geometry, reading, writing, and any high school, middle school, or elementary maths and sciences. I'm wanting to work with k12-ages. I've attended a high school that was heavily concentrated in the maths and sciences, and having been a premed student preparing for med school, has given me the confidence in assisting others in becoming comfortable with these subjects as well. I'm looking forward to participating in your academic success, let's get started today! I'm a 23 year old grad of St. Thomas. I majored in Pre-med and have a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Kim was very professional and knowledgeable. Kim helped our son with 6th grade math-- dependent and independent variables, fractions and decimals. She was able to help our son better understand these concepts. This was our first tutoring session. We believe she will be very helpful in working with our son over the summer, so that he has a good foundation, prior to going into 7th grade.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied Genetics both at the university I graduated from and up until I took the MCAT. The MCAT focused extensively on the subject and I've done many practice problems on my own including pedigrees, Mendel's genetics, cross-tests, linkage, inheritance patterns, and population genetics.
