My specialty is in Reading, Writing, and English for Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade and E.S.L. students- Pre-Kindergarten to Adults. I have also taught math and social studies in 1st-5th grade.

I have over 20 plus years in the field of education. I will tutor in your home, at the local coffee shop, library or any other place of convenience for parent and or student.

For all students in every area that I tutor, I have the background, experience, and knowledge to plan and implement instruction designed to meet every student at their educational level while also taking into account their individual learning style.

I talk with parents and students before or at the first session to gather educational needs and to set goals for student progress. As I plan lessons, I take into account these needs and goals, while accessing student performance, and am constantly evaluating/adapting my delivering according to student learning during the session. I take anecdotal records during each session and email parents of student progress after each session. As an instructor, I use the notes to plan the next tutoring session with regard to strengths and areas for additional instruction, enrichment opportunities, cross-curricular integration, and to keep a running record of student progress from the initial tutoring session to the current session. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with evaluating dyslexia in the public and private school systems since 2001. I held the position of Campus Dyslexia Specialist for 2 years in the public school. In this role, I gave students a battery of tests to assist in determining if a student had dyslexia. After I analyzed the results, I then went to the classroom teacher and gave specific teaching strategies to address the needs in the classroom. I also completed the 504 documentation and was responsible for presenting in parent meetings and ensuring that all teachers that worked with the student in the building were accountable for carrying out these modifications when teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a lifetime Texas Teaching Certification in Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten to 6th grade. It was obtained in 1989.

I have taught reading, writing, english, social studies and science in grades Pre-Kindergarten to 5th. I have 16 years of experience in the public school system and 2 years in the private school system. I also held the position of Language Arts/Social Studies content specialist for 5 years.

In the early grades, Pre-Kindergarten to 2nd grade, I have training in Reading Recovery,Reading Empowerment (certificate), Words Their Way, Phonics, and Early Reading Skills and Strategies.

I hold a lifetime English As A Second Language (ESL) Endorsement from the state of Texas. It was obtained in 1996. During my Master's Degree program, I also took 12 graduate hours in ESL.

I have worked with ESL students since 1989. I held the position of ESL Specialist for 4 years in a public elementary school. I have tutored ESL students and adults in English Acquisition, Reading, Writing, and English Language.

I have been designing curriculum for all levels of the ISEE test for a tutoring company for the past two years 6/11-6/13) as well as tutoring/teaching students. I have taken the practice tests from ERB and matched corresponding reading comprehension, math, problem solving, writing, English, and vocabulary (prefixes, bases, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms)curriculum to develop these individualized plans. I also hold an M.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction from HBU.

My undergraduate degree is a B.S.in Child Development and Family Relationships. Over the course of my degree, I had extensive training not only in the development of the child, but also is how the child acquires language and how significant early language strategies and exposure is critical in building the basic blocks of phonics and vocabulary. I did a semester of student teaching at the University of Texas at Austin Family Lab School where I instructed 3 and 4 year olds in phonics, vocabulary, and literature exposure.
Using my teaching certification in public schools, I have worked with Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade students in phonics instruction. I have taken courses in Reading Empowerment, Reading Recovery, and have been trained in the Words Their Way Phonics model.

Additional Coursework:
Reading Empowerment Class
Critical Components of Reading

Reading Tutoring for STAAR test
Reading Specialist for 3 years in public school
Taught 4th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies for 4 years in public school
Taught as an Intervention in Reading in grades PK-5th

Tutoring experience in SAT Reading and Writing (3 years)

Social Studies

I hold a Texas Teaching Certificate - EC-6 Generalist. I have taught Social Studies as a classroom teacher in 1st grade (2 years) and 4th grade (5 years). I was a Social Studies Specialist for three years and modeled lessons for teachers and assisted in writing district Social Studies curriculum to match TEKS for grades K - 5. During the three years as a specialist, I also pulled social studies groups in Grades 1-5 to assist with material and reading comprehension. I use anchor charts, note-taking, graphic organizers, and foldables to break down concepts so that students can comprehend subject material.

Study Skills

During my 20+ years in the field of education, I have served as an English As A Second Language Content Specialist as well as an Language Arts/Social Studies Content Specialist. In these two roles, one of the primary responsibilities was to met individual students at their academic level to then analyze what skills and strategies where needed to become successful in grade appropriate curriculum. Every lesson was planned to teach study skills and strategy skills needed to master language acquisition, reading comprehension, writing, subject area testing (math, science, social studies), and test prep (classroom evaluations, standardized tests including TAKS, SAT, ACT, ISEE,CAT, and Stanford).

During instruction in the above areas, graphic organizers and strategy cards were also made by myself and the student for the student to use as a study aid in-class and while preparing away from the school environment. This also built skills needed for note taking, outlining and brainstorming that are needed for high school, college, and any further career education chosen in addition or in lieu of a college degree.

I have experience as a classroom teacher as well as a content specialist (English As A Second Language/Language Arts and Social Studies) in teaching TAKS related material since 1996 to present. I have also taught the TAKS test format as a separate genre due to the fact that test-taking strategies are important to understand test question types and simply, what the test question is asking you to do as a reader. There is a cognitive reading requirement in all subject areas of the test (math, reading, writing, social studies, and science). If a student does not understand the question, they will be unsuccessful at answering it. At the same token, if a student does not understand the question-type (inference, fact, context clues, vocabulary, point of view) they will be unsuccessful at using reading comprehension strategies to critically read and analyze text information to arrive at an answer.

In my instruction, I also use a combination of TAKS passages so that students have the experience and knowledge of the content and format of the test and actual reading passages from novels, textbooks, articles, magazines etc. aligned to TEKS and used in classrooms daily to master academic subjects. In this model, students receive a "balanced-diet" of exposure to TAKS related passages and subject area content to to link comprehension skills and strategies that are needed for TAKS testing and daily subject area success.
