About Martha

I grew up in Paris where I attended french schools. French is my first language but it is also much more than that. I'm passionate about reading in French, classic authors like Proust as well as more modern authors such as Carrere. There are few things I enjoy more than transmitting my love for my language to others who are attempting to learn it. It can be challenging to teach a language which is, of course, constantly changing and possesses many different levels of familiarity/formality. This is why I find it helpful for students to work with native speakers in order to master these levels and feel comfortable in many different contexts. Language are rich and multifaceted. It is common for teachers/tutors to concentrate on what people call "book french", heavily formal french which, while useful, is not ideal in all situations. I believe it is important for the student to develop a sense of which tone is more appropriate and hence, develop their abilities and confidence in these abilities.

I know how difficult it can be to learn French and I tailor each lesson to my students needs. I believe that, immersion aside, there are not many better ways to improve in a language other than to learn privately with a native speaker. I have had experience tutoring many students with different levels. Some preferred to concentrate on the spoken aspect as they required it in their professional endeavors, other wished to focus both on writing and speaking. I always begin by asking my students exactly what their goals are so that we can work together on a program that suits them and that interests them. It is easy to lose interest and motivation in learning a language when one feels one is not making appropriate progress. I design my lessons such that this loss of motivation does not occur. There is nothing more important than maintaining one's spontaneous curiosity to learn in order to continue improving. Learning a language is a continuous progress that even native speakers continue to struggle with at times but it can also be highly rewarding. I look forward to working with students and watching them start or continue a journey towards fluency.

Please contact me by phone or email to set up lessons at whichever time is suitable for you. I am fairly flexible and can travel to NYC. A bientot!
