I have a diverse background in science, teaching, and writing. Recently I have worked as a tutor for the 7th grade STAAR test in writing and math and loved working with students in that setting. I love the feeling I get when I can see a student finally understands and suddenly things begin to "click" into place. I like to use a variety of activities to hold the student's interest and learn material in a multi-layered approach.
Every student has strengths and I like to figure out how I can use their stronger skills to help them in areas where they are lacking interest and/or understanding.
I struggled in math until I had a good teacher willing to work to help me find what was missing in my background. My struggle as a student has helped me be a better teacher.
Science is all about curiosity and I have an abundance of curiosity. Science addresses the how and why of the way the world works from an atomic level to cellular, to environmental, to cosmic. I like to tap into a student's natural questioning of the world to interest them in science.
In a world of texts and tweets, we are losing the effectiveness of well written communication. How may misunderstandings happen because a text message was poorly written? I like to help students draw on their on experiences to develop a subject, bring forth interesting details, and add flavor and personality when appropriate.
I recently tutored 7th grade students for the math and writing portions of STARR. I took students who told me, "I don't math," and showed them many ways in which they were using mathematical thinking so that math became relatable, meaningful and a normal part of life. For the writing, I had many students tell me that I would have been so proud of them when they were taking the test because they remembered techniques, stayed focused and were able to write a good essay.
I like students who want to learn to enjoy learning. I want students to get excited about coming to tutoring. If you are a student who feels left behind in the classroom and has started to hate school, I can help you feel more positive and excited to embrace learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
