About Hannah

I am a former teacher of all core subjects, and I also have experience tutoring ACT and SAT prep. I specialize in tutoring late elementary school through early high school students. I believe each child learns differently, and make it a point to adjust my tutoring style to best fit the student's best style of learning. I have experience teaching students with learning difficulties as well as gifted students. I pride myself in my patience and my ability to listen to my students. The more I learn about them, the better they can learn academics from me.

I love being able to bring each student to the "aha" moments of learning where it becomes fun to learn and no longer is a chore or struggle. I am willing to meet a student for tutoring at any library of their choice, or go to their home for a tutoring session if that proved most convenient.

I used to tell people all the time, "I'm good at math, but I hate it! I never want a job involving math." Years later, I find myself to be a financial secretary and LOVING it. I love the opportunity to teach kids what it took me years to learn: Math can be fun!

English, literature, writing, and reading comprehension have always been my strongest subjects. Critical thinking is the core of these subjects, and I truly enjoy watching the wheels turn in my students heads as they expand their reasoning and learn in these subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have previous tutoring experience with every section of the ACT, including the English section. I have a degree in literature and history, as well as over six years of teaching experience. I enjoy taking my skills and background and helping students learn to read critically and write strategically to set them up for success.

Elementary Math

I have over 6 years experience teaching one-on-one, including math at an elementary and middle school level. By day, I am a financial secretary for a large nonprofit and work with math and numbers all day long. I love helping students figure out how math can be fun to learn and practice.

English

I have a Bachelor's degree in literature as well as more than 5 years' worth of teaching experience, mostly 1-on-1 tutoring style teaching.

Literature

I hold a B.A. with honors in Literary Studies from UT Dallas. In addition, I have over 6 years of one-on-one/small group teaching experience. I have taught at every grade level, and tailor my tutoring style to fit my student.

Piano

I have played piano since age 4 and was classically trained. I taught piano for 5 years through college. I teach mainly beginner through late intermediate students. In addition to performance, theory, music comprehension, and sight reading, I can also teach piano/keyboard for band accompaniment.

Prealgebra

I have experience teaching math at both the elementary and middle school levels. It was my strongest subject when I was in school. In addition, I am a financial secretary in my day job and work with numbers every single day.

Reading

I have a Bachelor's degree in literature. I also have over 4 years of experience tutoring/teaching literature and language arts, mostly at a high school level.

Writing

I have a degree in literature and a background editing and proofing books. Writing and helping others write their best is not only a skill of mine, but also a passion.

Patient, kind and thorough!

Hannah is great at working with my daughter. She is patient, and able to keep her attention! Seems to be taking some of the panic out of my daughter as well. I'm glad we were able to find such a great tutor.
