About Ambrah

Greetings!

During my career as a public school educator, I developed a passion for teaching students not only how to read, but increasing the comprehension and vocabulary during the process.

I taught reading to general education students for many years. My goal was always to meet the students were they were and teach robust and rigorous lessons to encourage and support academic growth.

I currently work with special education students in the area of reading. The majority of my experience has been with students with learning disabilities or disorders that include: Autism, ADHD/ADD, ODD , Dyslexia and emotional disturbances.

When working with students I provide consistency and structure, however I understand the need, and possess the ability to adjust quickly when necessary.

I have also tutored students in preparation for the reading and science STAAR tests. I begin by studying released versions of past STAAR tests and identifying the topics that are testing and creating lessons that covered those topics. Having written curriculum for my school's STAAR preparation program, I have a lot of knowledge of the STAAR test and its components and what it takes to be successful on the test.

When working with any student, the first thing I do is assess the needs of the student and building an individualized curriculum to address those needs. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student enjoy learning and seeing the growth that happens as a result!

I have a Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of North Texas, as well as teaching certificates in general studies in grades 4-8, English as a Second Language, and Special Education.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with you and your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am currently a Special Education Team Leader, as well as a special education teacher in a public middle school. I work with 14 special education students that have ADD/ADHD. I teach them a variety of techniques that they can use to remain focused in class. I also work with their teachers on teaching strategies and techniques that they can use to help those students remain focused or to give them a productive outlet for their energy. Teaching students how to reduce distractions or to focus on the task at hand (despite the distractions),and keeping students engaged are key when working with students with ADD/ADHD.

Autism

I am currently a Special Education Team Leader, as well as a special education teacher in a public middle school. This year, I work with 8 students with Autism. The students are in varying places on the spectrum. I work with my students on positive behavior, social skills, communication, and academics. Each student with Autism is distinctly different and building relationships with them is of the utmost importance.

STAAR

I have reviewed released versions of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade reading and the 8th grade science STAAR tests and identified what TEKS (topics) are covered. Once I identified the most common TEKS, I developed lessons that taught/supported those TEKS. I also worked with the students on test taking strategies.
