About Ram

If you were to ask me "What is one thing that is important to you?", my answer would be learning. I am passionate about learning and to me it is imperative; the day I stop learning is the day I would consider myself as non existent. That is the primary reason I chose to teach students, regardless of their age, as the time I spend with them is not only a moment for them to learn, but also an opportunity for me to learn as well, learn how to think like others.

For the past eight years, I have been fortunate in teaching, guiding and mentoring students from school (K-12) as well colleges, covering a wide range subjects in math, science and engineering. I have taught grade level math for elementary, middle and high schools such as algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus and statistics. My teaching methods are based on reinforcing fundamental concepts which help in raising their self confidence and self esteem. I let them make their mistakes and take the opportunities as moments of learning and make them understand their mistakes and point out ways to avoid them. I encourage them to strengthen their perception and cognizance skills through multilevel reinforcement such as visualizing, writing, speaking and listening and use traditional board and multimedia tools.

I work closely with students and explain using different approaches if I feel that they are not digesting the material. I try to understand the root cause of the problem and try to fix it so that the students gain confidence in what they are doing. I extend the boundaries of learning by giving real life examples and analogies from different areas so that the students have a good understanding that gets embedded.

I have worked with students and encourage them to think creatively. I believe that each student is inherently talented and I work towards making them realize that they can succeed using focused learning of concepts. Many of my students have excelled and won competitions in science and math all the way from district to national levels. The work sessions with students is on an individual basis or in a small group as well as I firmly believe that students in group benefit from their peers. I make them verbalize their solution as this reinforces their knowledge and also gives self confidence in presenting their solution.

I have taught Engineering courses including Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Programming and Math Modelling. I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the student community.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have helped students prepare for ACT and SAT math subjects as well as ACT science. I help them with providing pointers in doing the problems more accurately and reinforce the basics behind the computations if they need.

Algebra 1

I have tutored over 30 students in the past from PISD, FISD, Allen and McKinney over the last few years.

Algebra 2

I have a Ph.D in mechanical engineering and have helped students excel in their school as well as off-school curriculum related activities. Math and Physics are two subjects that I love and have taught many students over the years.

C

I have taught 'C' at the University of Arlington as part of the numerical analysis course for the undergraduates. I have also implemented many numerical techniques as part of my thesis in calculating solutions of complex non-linear differential equations. Further, I have experience in coding windows programs using their native interface in C as well.

Calculus

I have a Ph.D in mechanical engineering and have done work in mathematical modelling using advanced mathematical concepts. This has helped me have a deeper understanding of the subject and that experience has helped me with my students.

Chemical Engineering

I have a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras India. I have experience in lecturing subjects including Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Reactor Engineering. I have published papers in these fields in reputed journals and has worked in engineering industry as a product design engineer.

Computer Programming

I have worked as developer and software design engineer in start up companies with experience in Java/J2EE technologies. I have been a consultant in many companies managing product development, project management and testing. I have taught courses in C/C++ and Java at Universities.

Geometry

I have a Ph.D in Engineering and have taught students concepts in Geometry. I have helped them gain a better understanding of the subject and help them in solving problems.

Java

I have developed products for start-up companies using Java/J2EE technologies with data modeling using Oracle, MySQL and other database programs, I have a Ph.D. in engineering and am very strong in math and math modeling.

MATLAB

MATLAB is a programming language that is used in modelling systems. I have done a few projects with high school students that needed MATLAB to solve system of differential equations to predict the "Efficacy of medication in controlling HIV infection"; There was another project that involved predicting forest fire spread using cellular automata and random walk technique (Monte Carlo method) for which I used MATLAB in calculating fire spreading rate and control of it using chemicals. I have also used OCTAVE, an open source version with MATLAB functionality and SCILAB, another tool similar to MATLAB and OCTAVE.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering and have worked as an adjunct faculty at The University of Texas at Arlington. I have taught courses including Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and C Programming. I have written peer reviewed papers in these fields.

Microsoft Access

As part of the MIS course that I am teaching currently, I have included Access programming to help students understand the db basics and how Access can be used effectively create tables, query tables to extract data, report generation and data modelling. I have also developed some solutions as a consultant using Access and connect it to Microsoft Excel as a reporting tool so that Pivot Table features of Excel can be used to analyze the data.

Physics

I have a Ph.D in ME and have taught courses at UT Arlington, ME department.

Prealgebra

I have helped kids in Prealgebra to pass the CBE (Credit By Exam).

Python

As a mentor to several students, I have helped them create applications in Python, Java and Matlab. These applications involved user interface, sophisticated mathematical models and graphing. The problems involved solving disease spread, prediction of pathways of breast and pancreatic cancer, and HIV infection response to medication.
