About Chisomo

My tutoring approach is unique in that I really try to make sure students understand why everything is as it is, rather than just encourage rote learning. I never give up on my students. Provided you are patient with me, I promise that you will leave any session with me with 101% educationally sound conclusion! I invest a lot of effort into making sure concepts are thoroughly understood, and pay less attention to monetary rewards. Where time allows, I always have extra work for my student to do that will help: 1) Give them more practice, 2) Keep them ahead of the class and *most importantly*, 3) Make them progressively more confident and independent so as to not require my services anymore. I tell my students that, "My job is to get you, as quickly as possible, to a point where I won't have a job anymore!" ... Hopefully when you are satisfied with my service, you can refer me to some other parents/students.

In 2012, I graduated from Truman State University (Truman) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with Actuarial Science. I have also completed the Society of Actuaries’ Financial Mathematics certification, Probability certification, Validation by Educational Experience and am continuing to take more professional exams and Continuing Education. Truman is the leading liberal arts institution in Missouri. Using Economics’ principles (Utility Theory) and Philosophy’s deductive reasoning (Set Theory), I endeavored to perform a unique exposition of actuarial and financial valuations. This culminated in my writing and presenting a research paper that was geared towards academicians that have neither actuarial nor finance backgrounds. The paper had a great reception and Truman’s Actuarial program is flourishing today. This all exemplifies my credentials and teaching acumen.

In addition to these academic and education experiences, I am a very adept web/applications developer and IT professional. This stems from two years of experience in application development at Web Integration Services of Truman State University and over four years of leading the Technology Team of the International Association of Black Actuaries.

I am currently a mathematics graduate teaching research assistant at the University of Nebraska and very enthusiastic about making sure all my students get the best that education has to offer. I have had relevant coursework at both the graduate and undergraduate level. These courses include: Historical Mathematics, Topology, Advanced Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis, Graph Theory Discrete Structures, Risk Models, Contingencies, Stochastic Processes, Financial Economics, Accounting etc. I enjoy all kinds of mathematics, computer programming, and actuarial science. As such, I have developed vast exposure to various actuarial areas and expertise in application development.

For advanced students, I absolutely love to teach introductory proof based material, discrete mathematics, differential equations and linear algebra, algorithms. I am however, equally well versed in elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc. at the high and middle school levels.

Be rest assured that wherever I can, I will go beyond and above to get my students to a educationally sound point, even if I have to do so outside scheduled tutoring hours. If employed, I aim to demonstrate initiative and commitment to meeting high expectations of my clients and students.

I'm very excited and look forward to working with you!

***PRICING POLICIES & PROCEDURES***

The very first session is the Trial 'dry run' that I offer for free! It is typically shorter than regular sessions (an hour or so) and serves as a chance for both of us to 'test the waters' so we can decide what style of instruction and learning will fit best in the upcoming lessons. I prefer tutoring sessions to take place on a regular weekly cycle, so it also serves as an opportunity for us to plan and commit to the regular weekly schedule moving forward.

To maximize my effectiveness, my general policy is that regular sessions must run for 2 hours. My students typically have no problems enduring that amount of time... Should the two hours be too tiresome or fatiguing however, then I am always be happy to incorporate a recess for as long as my student likes.

If I find that the work for a session is a lot and I am running over that two hours, then I will never bill you for the extra time. If however, I find that the scheduled work takes less than two hours, then I will always have extra work for my student to do will help with confidence building and learning ahead.

Whenever possible, please email me the assignment you are needing help with at least 24 hours before our meeting so that I can prepare an answer/explanation. If not, there may be some instances where 2hrs will not be enough time for me to think of an elaborate solution to the assignment.

If you find yourself needing to cancel a scheduled session, kindly inform me at least 24 hours ahead of time. This is just so that I don't waste too much time and resources travelling to the lesson location or preparing for the lesson.

I neither bill any extra for travel expenses, nor the research and preparation I do outside a session. However, I would like up-front disclosure regarding my tutees' level of confidence so I can prepare myself for the possibility of having to spend more time teaching elementary concepts than the ones they are primarily seeking help on.

Also note that I do offer lessons at negotiable discounted rates for group-tutoring, multi-hour sessions, and referrals.

I am quite flexible and can usually meet my students at any time or place of their choosing. Also, unless of course I am already assisting some student, if you have any random question you are stuck on, that I may be able to help with quickly I am available remotely at no extra charge 24\7 any time of day, via phone, Skype etc

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
