I am an artist who teaches and a teacher who writes. I believe creativity is messy and the biggest obstacle to it is fear. I like to help people relax and enjoy the process. Creativity is a process full of choices and adventure. Skills can be learned, creativity is caught. I recently graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas where I studied drawing and painting. I write “how to” articles of step by step guides to creating art and improving skills. I have taught art in my home, at my church and as a volunteer in public schools in California and Texas. Art is my passion.
I am a graphic designer by trade and enjoy designing in both print and web. I write “how to” articles about computer graphic programs. As a print shop graphics person I have worked with many customers to help them with their artwork and to trouble shoot their files. This includes teaching them how to use computer graphic programs correctly. Graphic design is an ever changing vocation and I consider myself a lifelong learner who loves to share what I know.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a graphic designer for over 15 years. I work in a marketing department where I create promotional letters, postcards, self-mailers, packaging, emails and landing pages. I work in Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop every day to do my job. I understand how they work together. I am primarily a print designer so I understand what needs to happen to make a document print ready and acceptable to a printing source. I have a BA in Fine Art so I understand design and color. I love paper and understand how paper choice can hinder or improve a final project. I have worked with numerous volunteers and volunteer organizations and understand how overwhelming a project can be to someone unfamiliar with the industry. I have helped college students get that needed insight into what their professor requires and was recently a student myself.
As a graphic designer I have used Photoshop for 10 years. I can teach the basics, intermediate and advanced levels. I am a print and web designer, so I understand the requirements for both environments. I work primarily on a PC, but also have worked on a Mac.
As an artist I use Photoshop to create mixed media pieces from scanned drawing and painting. I am interesting in experimenting in Photoshop and like the technical challenge of creating art with Photoshop.
I recently graduated from UTD magna cum laude in Fine Arts. I received straight A’s in all my art history courses. I can help with study strategies if the course requires a lot of memorization as some courses do, but also help with research and writing. My experience includes being an art mentor and working as a youth leader at my church in what I call art ministry.
As a Fine Arts major with an emphasis in drawing, I understand that drawing is the foundation of all art. Whether you are preparing sketches to plan a painting or sculpture to rendering photorealistic representation of a subject, drawing is a skill that can be learned and improved. Observation and practice is key. I learned to draw by drawing alongside other students and teachers. I draw alongside my students demonstrating the lesson, sharing my secrets.
I draw with pencil, colored pencil, chalk and pen and ink. I received a first place in mixed media drawing at the Park Cities Presbyterian church 2009 art show. Another one of my mixed media drawing was accepted into a show at the Texas Women’s University in 2010. My training at UTD taught me to approach drawing as a means to express a concept. For those with foundational skills in drawing introducing concept into a work of art takes it to the next level.
I like to teach both children and adults, but my favorite age group is teenagers who are just discovering their talent and inner drive to create art.
AT UTD, my emphasis was in drawing and painting. I received straight A’s in all my art courses. I can help with teaching a student to learn the process of creating better art work. This includes not just technique but also design and concept. I believe if an artist has a good strategy and puts the time required into a work of art they can successfully improve. I am by nature an encourager and understand one of the biggest road blocks to creating art is fear of failure. It is my job to eliminate fear from my student’s mindset and not only paint well and explore new mediums and processes but to enjoy painting! My experience includes teaching art as a volunteer in my children’s schools, being an art mentor and working as a youth leader at my church in what I call art ministry.
I learned to sew when I was about twelve. Throughout the years I have sewn clothes for myself and my kids, when it made sense. I sewed when I knew I could make something cheaper than I could buy it in a store like simple skirts, tops and shorts. For six years I had my own arts and craft business. I made cloth dolls, quilted wall-hangings and soft animals. I sewed almost every day. I am not a seamstress, but I am available to instruct someone in sewing basics so they can do simple projects and repairs. I love to quilt and would love to teach someone to quilt.
