About Hailey

Hello!

Right off the bat, let me tell you that teaching is my passion. As an undergraduate I studied history, anthropology and literature, but was very unsure what I wanted to do afterward. I competed my MA in 2013, and since then have worked as adjunct faculty for a History Department and Interdisciplinary Studies Program, the curator of a museum, and most recently as an adolescent guide for a Montessori school. I love education. My degree is in comparative European religious history, and I fully plan on going forward for my PhD in religious history of the American South at some point. I have experience with American, World, and European history as well as various forms of literature (British, American, Gothic, World, Religious). With my BA I completed a Great Works Certificate, for which I took many classes covering the Classics, and it was incredibly rewarding. If you want to know more about my academic and teaching background, feel free to ask!

In my spare time I'm an avid reader, anything from non-fiction history books (which I don't even just read for class anymore, now it's for fun!) to classic literature, to Star Wars. I am a firm believer, also, that the popular culture that teenage students enjoy(video games, movies, books etc.) are strong tools in helping them not only with understanding the world of today, but also their subjects in school. My partner currently teaches his own History 102 class at UNLV using films, books, and art to show the shaping of American culture. Each student has a different way of learning, and if we as instructors can use exciting ways to get and keep them interested, then we are truly doing our jobs.

I think I have rambled enough, and of course if you wish to know more, just let me know! I love working with students, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My field of Anthropology is mainly cultural. My background is in folklore and mythology.

The importance of this, to me, is giving students the ability to look through a lens of cultural anthropology when studying for example history, and vice versa.

For cultural Anthropology, students should be learning the approaches to studying human behavior (emic vs. etic), what it means to use "thick description", etc. Most importantly, of course, understanding the value of learning about other cultures.

Literature

As a college instructor there was always a literary component to my history courses, and as an undergraduate myself I completed a Great Works Certificate, which required completing many different courses on various kinds of literature. As an adolescent teacher, I have consistently integrated literature into all aspects of my curriculum.

Reading

I have taught English at the middle school level for the past two years, which has included reading, writing, and spelling.

Religion

The respective histories of the major world religions, for example those that are Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism.

Also, the histories of other religions as well, past and present:
-polytheistic religions of antiquity
-Buddhism
-Hinduism
-modern Wicca and other pagan movements
-African slave religion such as Obeah, Voo Doo, and Hoo Doo

This is the major part of my field, and I have extensive experience researching a majority of these.

Spelling

For the past two years I taught English to adolescents. One of the major aspects of this was spelling and punctuation.

Writing

All of the courses I taught at UNLV were writing intensive. I have tutored many students at many levels with writing essays and creative writing!
