About Julie

I was a Master's candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University and I have a degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from Case-Western Reserve University. During my years at Case-Western Reserve, I was a paid tutor in the Resident Tutor Program, a federal program which provided group and individual tutoring to public school students. It was a joy to watch those children progress from struggling and, sometimes, apathetic students, to students who became not only eager to come to class, but also made significant progress in learning how to learn. I have well over 2000 hours of recent tutoring experience (over 1000 hours of which is through WyzAnt) and have worked with students at all grade levels and levels of achievement.

I was selected for a three-year term on the Parent Advisory Team for my hometown's junior high school and spent four years on the high school's Home and School Association board. I have also spent many years involved in local and regional community activities, including having been the leader for 8 years of a diverse and very engaged Girl Scout troop. I am still in touch with most of my girls from that troop.

To me, a key factor in student success is that the student is guided to find his or her own styles of learning and motivation. There are many ways to process information and to learn. Howard Gardner of Harvard University has identified at least nine distinct types of intelligence. I believe that helping a person find his or her own way to digest, process and retain information, and then to be able to effectively share that information, is a major responsibility of teachers, and, especially, of tutors who are asked to help to stimulate and improve the performances of individual students at every level.

One of my favorite tutoring successes was working for a period of time with a young lady who was struggling with reading comprehension, writing, and test-taking. She had no confidence in herself and was thoroughly frustrated with herself and her teachers. I helped her to break down her learning process into manageable and achievable goals, find her own way of learning, and then take those elements and apply them to not just basic reading and writing, but also to her progress in all areas of schooling. I am proud to say that this young lady graduated cum laude from one of the top schools in the country, went on to post-graduate school where she also graduated with distinction and is now one of the top performers in her field.

I specialize in three main areas of tutoring. First, in Language Arts, I help students who would like to excel in their reading comprehension and/or writing skills, or who are in need of improvement in those areas. Second, I specialize in helping students to prepare for the Language Arts portions of standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, STAAR, PARCC, Accuplacer, GRE and GED exams. I also help students with general preparation for various graduate-level entrance exams and professional certification exams such as Praxis. Third, I help students to research, plan, and write papers for various purposes, including school assignments and college application essays.

I am pleased to say that most of my students have not only significantly improved their academic success in the areas on which we have worked, but have also become much happier and more consistent students overall. I have had students move from Ds and Cs to consistent As and Bs. I have had standardized testing students increase their scores quite substantially, and have helped several students achieve perfect and near-perfect scores on the reading and writing portions of the exams. In addition, my students and I have become great friends and partners in their learning while achieving those goals.

I will be glad to discuss your needs and you can determine if my skills and personality would be a good fit. Let's see if we can work together to develop excellent student skills which will not only result in significant improvement in the immediately targeted subject(s) but also develop lifelong learning expertise.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have a great deal of public speaking experience. Some of the formal positions I have held which have involved public speaking are: VP, Program Development for the American Association of University Women; Programs and Special Events Coordinator for the GFWC Woman’s Club of Denville; VP, Programs for the Home & School Association of Morris Knolls High School; and spokesperson for the Statewide PSG Strategy Committee under the auspices of the NJ Department of Labor. In each of these roles, I have had the opportunity to write speeches and deliver them to groups ranging from just a few to hundreds of people. I enjoy the process of developing just the right tone and content for the audience to be addressed, and I am quite good at making both myself and my audience comfortable with the circumstance of being joined in the reciprocal tasks of compelling speaking and active listening.

Please look at my profile and my Language Arts qualifications to get a general idea of my background and qualifications.

SAT Reading

My tutoring background includes many years of teaching reading at all levels, and for various applications, including standardized testing. I focus not only on the each student's strengths and weaknesses, but also on the specific requirements of the particular exam. One of my recent SAT students significantly improved her scores to achieve a 790 (out of 800) on the Reading portion, and a perfect 800 on the Writing section. With regard to the redesigned (March 2016) SAT Reading portion, I am thoroughly versed in the specific evidence-based reading content type and techniques used by the SAT in this area. In fact, I have long worked with this the significant elements of this new format in coaching students for other standardized tests. While I also stress building a strong vocabulary, I work with students to help them figure out unfamiliar words and choose correct answers in context. I coach my students to recognize "key words" as well as certain “tell” words that are invaluable in understanding the reading passages. My goals are to help each student to feel confident in approaching the SAT Critical Reading section, and to become a better critical reader in general.

SAT Writing

I have years of experience in helping students with writing requirements for many testing applications, including standardized tests. With regard to the SAT, however, I am very aware that there are specific criteria in the SAT writing portion that will lead to a higher score. One of my recent students significantly improved her SAT scores to achieve a perfect 800 on the Writing portion and (790 out of 800) on the Reading portion. I have studied the redesigned (March 2016) SAT testing requirements thoroughly and am well-versed in techniques that will help a student to effectively approach the new Language section format, as I have worked with this format while coaching students on other standardized tests. I will also work with students to create the elements that the SAT readers will be looking for in the significantly redesigned essays to make sure that they become comfortable with using their own writing strengths in combination with specific reading and analytic skills to create effective and convincing essays which will meet the new SAT criteria for excellent essay content and composition.

As an ELA tutor with over 2000 hours of experience, I have taught writing skills to all of my students, whether they were at an elementary level or were writing essays for high school AP classes or college courses. I use a very targeted approach in teaching students the process of creating writing that is relevant, creative and thorough. Virtually all of my students have been able to significantly improve their writing skills and their composition grades in school. As for standardized testing, the students I have worked with have all significantly raised their writing (and reading) scores during the course of our work together. I have had two students achieve perfect scores on the SAT Writing portion of the exam, and several have boosted their previous scores to achieve near-perfect scores on the SAT and ACT Writing portions of the exams.
