About Rene

Ain't No Shaming in My ELAR Tutoring Training

Translation: After a session with me, feel confident in English Language Arts and reading skills.

Do you consider yourself a professional at social media writing? Believe me, there is nothing wrong with being social media literate. Sure it's informal writing, but in my opinion, social media writing is a great way to introduce your ideas and express your thoughts to your audience--emoticons included. Nevertheless, there is no need to limit your writing skills to the Twitterverse; show your teachers, peers and parents, and prospective bosses that you have the professional writing skills needed to be successful in the academic and business realm after receiving English language arts and reading tutoring from yours truly--me!

Teaching is my passion, but teaching the mechanics of English and reading has been my guilty pleasure for the last ten years. I hold standard Texas English (6-12) and principal certificates, and I've spent the last twelve years preparing students (and my own children) for the state's multiple standardized tests as well as the the writing and verbal language requirements of the professional world.

I've received multiple campus teacher of the year awards and monetary awards for raising test scores. I've served as an instructional specialist helping to create curriculum and mentor other teachers with classroom and lesson delivery.

Even if I'm not the educator you choose, please ensure that whomever you choose extends their passion for teaching so that you'll have a long-term favorable impression in the joys of learning and utilizing the various aspects of English language arts and reading.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an educator, I have taught all grade levels through either student teaching, as a classroom teacher, instructional and curriculum specialist, or as a substitute. Each educational subject and grade level warrants different types of instructional delivery, and being that I hold a state board of educator certificate for teaching, I am qualified to teach all grade levels.

Grammar

I have been employed as a public school English language arts (which includes grammar and writing) and reading educator for more than a decade. I have created and delivered personalized curriculum, instruction, and assessment to meet the needs of advanced, on-target, and struggling grammar students in classroom and grade-level settings. This includes lessons in revising and editing, and publishing compositions. I have countless documented statistics demonstrating successful writing/grammar passing rates on informal and formal classroom assessments as well as state-mandated tests.
In addition, I currently provide literacy and writing remediation during extended school hours, summer school, and to adults seeking to earn their GED.

Literature

I have countless documented statistics demonstrating successful reading passing rates on informal and formal classroom assessments as well as state-mandated tests that assess students' proficiency in analyzing various genres of literary texts.

Spelling

I have served as a UIL spelling coach for middle school students who participated and successfully obtained rank in competitions.

STAAR

As an English teacher and instructional specialist with a Masters degree in educational administration--as well as over ten years experience of teaching students and designing specific strategies to help them pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and the State Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) state standardized tests--I possess the required credentials to successfully help students not only succeed, but increase their state mandated standardized test scores. Through in class and supplemental instruction, I teach students to utilize the skills learned over the course of the school year, rather than "last minute" cram sessions. I have designed STAAR specific study strategies to accommodate the needs of specific learners of varying age groups. I specialize in helping students succeed in troublesome TEKS and objectives that need more clarification and practice. I have countless professional development hours that show that I am knowledgeable of the test's format and requirements. Moreover, my experience in curriculum and assessment enables me to design STAAR-like practice assessments to help students prepare for the actual assessment.

Study Skills

As an instructional specialist with over ten years experience of teaching students specific strategies to help them pass state standardized tests, I have the required skills to successfully help students pass or complete required assignments. I have designed study strategies to accommodate the needs of specific learners of varying age groups. Moreover, I have consistently increased test scores and received accolades for the successes.

TAKS

As an English teacher and instructional specialist with over ten years experience of teaching students and designing specific strategies to help them pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and the State Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) state standardized tests, I have the required to successfully help students not only succeed, but increase their test scores. Through in class and supplemental instruction, students continuously learn and utilize effective skills habitually--rather than "last minute". I have designed study strategies to accommodate the needs of specific learners of varying age groups. Moreover, I have consistently increased test scores and received accolades for the successes.

Vocabulary

I have held a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (includes reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary) since 2003, and have been employed as a public school English language arts and reading educator and instructional specialist within my more than 15 year experience. Learning and mastering content area vocabulary is integral to student success; therefore, I have always developed and delivered curriculum, instruction, and assessment with major emphasis on learning vocabulary to meet the needs of advanced, on-target, and struggling students in classroom and grade-level settings--regardless of content area. I have countless documented statistics demonstrating successful passing rates on informal and formal classroom assessments as well as state-mandated tests due to the increased content vocabulary focus.
In addition, I currently provide literacy remediation during extended school hours, summer school, and to adults seeking to earn their GED. For students who are receiving English as a second language instruction, I strengthen their reading and writing skills by instituting a vocabulary-based approach.
