About Sheryl

I completed a Master of Science degree in biology and a Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, and graduated with a GPA of 3.8. I have been fortunate to teach a wide variety of subjects at many different grade levels over the past 28 years before retiring. I am thankful to be able to continue to use my academic training and classroom teaching experience to tutor students in many subjects both in person and online. It is truly a fulfilling experience to see my students become more capable and confident at skills that were once difficult for them.

My goal in working with my students is to make concepts understandable using different methods that are suited to each person's learning style. I also want to get to know my students as individuals, and learn about their interests and talents.

I have five years of experience teaching 7th grade math, and one year of experience teaching 7th grade prealgebra. I also worked with students during the school day and after school doing math and science STAAR interventions.

In addition to having an undergraduate and graduate degree in biology, I taught general biology classes and an ecology class as an interim instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University. While working in public school systems, I taught integrated science courses which covered physical science, chemistry, biology, and earth science concepts at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. While teaching 8th grade, I prepared my students for the science STAAR test.

I am certified to teach all subjects in grades 1-8, as well as high school biology. I also have taught 7th grade Texas History for one year and 6th grade world geography for one year. I currently have the pleasure of tutoring elementary math, elementary reading, grammar, and elementary science to students in the 3rd through 8th grade, as well as high school and college biology. In addition, I have assisted undergraduate and graduate students at the university level with proofreading and writing.

I hope to work with you soon and see you become more confident and successful in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a strong foundation in reading, writing, and grammar. I have study materials and strategies that I will provide to give my students the skills and confidence necessary to do well on the exam.

ACT Reading

I have study materials and strategies that I can provide to students to prepare them for the exam.

ACT Science

I am approved to tutor ACT science via WyzAnt. I have taught a variety of science concepts for over 20 years. A large part of my teaching methodology is to teach students how to think, and not just memorize facts. Success on the science portion of the ACT is dependent on being able to think, as well as being able to interpret information. I enjoy seeing students become more confident when they see how well they can think through a problem.

ASVAB

I have successfully tutored clients in the science and math portions of the ASVAB. I have experience teaching the math and science skills that are tested on the ASVAB in public schools. I know how to give my students strategies to help think through complex questions on standardized tests.

Biology

I love the study of living things. My undergraduate degree is in Life Science Secondary Education. I taught 7th grade life science for three years before deciding to pursue a master's degree. While attending Stephen F. Austin State University as a graduate student, I worked as a biology tutor in the Academic Assistance and Resource Center at the university. After completing my Master of Science degree in biology in 1991, I also taught general biology and ecology for two years as an interim instructor at Stephen F. Austin.

Ecology

I completed thesis research on a pond ecosystem while completing my master's degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. After finishing my graduate degree, I was fortunate to be hired as an interim instructor at Stephen F. Austin to teach ecology and general biology for two years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach all subjects in grades 1-8. I also taught 6th grade science for three years and 6th grade world history for one year in the public school system. I have worked with younger students from ages 5 to 11 while giving private violin and fiddle lessons. I currently have the pleasure of tutoring elementary students both in person and online.

Elementary Math

I have a valid elementary teaching certificate for grades 1-8. I also taught middle school math for 5 years. I am currently tutoring several elementary students in math. I enjoy seeing my students gain confidence in skills that were difficult for them before.

Elementary Science

I taught life, earth, chemical, and physical science concepts to 6th graders for three years. I also wrote the 6th grade science curriculum and benchmark tests for my school district.

English

I have a valid teaching certificate which allows me to teach all subjects in grades 1-8. I have assisted students of many ages from 9 year olds on up to adults with work in their English studies. My strengths are writing and grammar. I enjoy working with words and finding new ways to communicate ideas. I am thankful for the wonderful foundation in literature, writing, and grammar that I received from my high school and college English teachers, and I hope to impart the same in others.

Genetics

When I worked as an interim instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University, I taught genetics concepts as part of the general biology course offered there. In addition, I have a high school biology teaching certification, and the biology curriculum includes numerous genetics concepts.

Grammar

I am approved to tutor grammar via WyZant. I also had a wonderful teacher in high school who gave me a strong foundation in writing and grammar. When I had my first college writing assignment as a freshman, I realized how helpful her instruction was. I would like to be able to pass on some of that to students that I work with.

Macintosh

I have owned and used Macintosh computers since 1988 for academic and business purposes. The first computer I purchased was a Macintosh, and I've stuck with them ever since. I am familiar with Apple's operating systems, and know how to do basic troubleshooting.

Physical Science

I am approved to teach physical science via WyzAnt, and I taught physical science topics to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as part of a general science curriculum for middle school in Texas. I created many of my own materials and activities in order to give my students greater understanding of topics such as potential and kinetic energy, energy transformations, forces, and simple machines.

Prealgebra

I am approved to teach pre-algebra via WyzAnt, and I also taught one year of 7th grade pre-algebra in a public school. When I was in 8th grade, I had a wonderful, enthusiastic teacher who gave me a great foundation in using algebra for problem solving. As a result of his teaching, I enjoy the challenge of using algebra to solve real world problems. I hope to pass that on to others, as well.

Proofreading

I have a strong background in writing and grammar. This has been beneficial to me throughout my educational career. I wrote a thesis to complete my master's degree, and I have helped to edit two book and CD projects. Most recently, I have successfully used WyzAnt's online platform to assist clients with proofreading and editing college writing assignments.

Reading

In addition to being approved via WyzAnt to tutor reading, I am certified in Texas to teach all subjects in grades 1-8. I have also assisted students with many reading assignments in after school tutorials.

STAAR

As an 8th grade teacher, I prepared my students for the Science STAAR test. I was pleased to see that, as a group, they met or exceeded the average STAAR scores in the state and in my school district. Also, I have assisted students in math STAAR Intervention sessions during the school day and occasionally after school.

Violin

I have given fiddle and violin lessons for 26 years. I have also given workshops at music festivals. In addition, I have performed old time music with my husband at many concerts, weddings, business gatherings, and venues over the years.

Writing

I have quite a bit of proofreading and writing experience. I enjoy working with words and finding different ways to express information. I helped to edit other students writing while in graduate school, and I wrote a thesis to complete my master's degree. I also helped edit two book and CD projects. Most recently, I have successfully used WyzAnt's online platform to assist with proofreading and editing college writing assignments.

Zoology

When I worked as an interim instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University, I taught zoology concepts in the lecture and lab portions of the general biology course offered there. In addition, I have a high school biology teaching certification, and the biology curriculum includes numerous zoology concepts.
