About Tommy

Bio

I am currently a research scientist for an oilfield services company. While at university, I tutored many students in physics and mathematics. Though I did not pursue teaching as a profession, sharing of knowledge is a large part of what I do in my professional life. A lifelong learner, I spend much of my personal time trying new things and challenging my own understanding. My goal as a tutor is to help the student reach a high level of independence and confidence.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have a PhD in applied mathematics. During undergraduate and graduate school I successfully tutored many students in algebra. My goal as a tutor is to help each student become independent and confident. To accomplish this goal, I always start by identifying where a student is strong in the subject. By starting at a point of confidence, a firm foundation can be built.
Algebra 2,

Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is almost always a tough subject for students. It is the first time they really have to combine algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. Plus, there is the new idea: limits. This makes it seem tough, for sure! While in undergraduate school, I tutored many science and engineering students. By helping those students, I developed a systematic approach to ensure those I tutored didn't miss any of the key ideas. I have a PhD in mathematics and use this stuff every day.
Physics,

Physics

While getting my BS and MS degrees in physics, I tutored many science and education students. My PhD is in applied mathematics and I use all of my training every day in my career. Physics is a beautiful subject and my passion. When I tutor this subject, I want to be sure the student can solve problems on their own. There can be no independence if I do your homework for you. Instead, I prefer to help you discover by explaining the material in many different ways and solving examples. My goal as a tutor is for you, the student, to become capable and confident.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I use all levels of advanced mathematics on a daily basis. I am constantly exploring the field to learn new and interesting ways to engage students. Pre-calculus is a subject that can cover a wide range of material not limited to advanced algebra, analytic geometry, trigonometry, logarithms and exponential functions, polar coordinates, and infinite series. My broad experience makes me qualified to help students learn not only how to solve problems but also how these topics fit together.

Amazing guy. Great tutor!

Tommy was thrown into the lion’s den. Our high school freshman was not interested at all in being bothered by tutoring. Tommy connected with him immediately and won him over effortlessly. Can’t thank him enough. Great guy.

Breathes Calculus

Knowledgeable and passionate about subject matter. Determined to ensure "why" calculus is important beyond passing tests/getting an "A". Patient with student and prepares students for next lesson with work problems.

Blake, 11 lessons with Tommy

Straight forward, easy to understand

Tommy helped me get a better understanding of my current physics topic and somewhat ahead. We went over things my professor skipped and that helped my understanding of physics more!

Syd, 7 lessons with Tommy

Kind, patient, and smart

Tommy covered my topics in depth. He explained everything thoroughly to help me have a better understanding of the concepts. He showed me how to review the information so that I could learn it and apply the knowledge.

Excellent tutor! High level math!

Tommy was able to tutor my daughter in AP Calaculus and help her get a better grip on limits and get back on track to feeling more confident again. Definitely has a gift of teaching! Brought his own dry erase board and did an excellent job explaining. Kind and patient! Will definitely use him again.
