About Emily

Howdy!

I am passionate about language learning and my love is to help students reach their language learning goals, so I'm excited for the chance to help you achieve yours! I graduated from my Master's program with merit and from my undergraduate program with magna cum laude honors, so I'm aware of what hard work can earn you. However, my experience tutoring and teaching various kinds of students - ADD students, students injured and unable to attend classes, and students simply struggling - has also taught me that work doesn't have to be so hard when someone steps in to help a student learn more efficiently and progress with greater success. That's what I'm here for!

I specialize in Ancient Greek, Latin, English, and beginner Japanese tutoring as well as helping students with writing, reading, and proofreading skills. I am not a certified teacher, but I have worked for both myself and for a university which deemed me more than qualified to help its struggling students. Last year I taught at a private academy where I worked with middle and high school Japanese. I believe that each student is an individual, and, while I have tutored groups of students before, I take a personalized approach. I want to get to know you, your goals, and your strengths and weaknesses. My job is to come up with strategies and teaching approaches that will help you as an individual learn to your greatest potential. That said, I do believe in challenging my students. My students know that I push hard and expect a lot, but they also know that I am patient and hold myself to the same high standard as I hold my students. I don't expect the impossible, but I love to help my students achieve what they believed was impossible!

My cancellation policy is only 6 hours in advance of a class. This is because I understand that emergencies do happen and because I know that I am working for you, not the other way around! However, I do encourage my students to please cancel any classes as far in advance as possible. In cases of vacations, doctors appointments, etc., I appreciate my students cancelling as soon as they know they will not be able to make the class. All the same, you will not be charged for a class cancelled at least six hours before the class is set to begin, and I do not mind setting up make-up classes.

I prefer to work with simple tools in a place where you, the student, feel comfortable. As such, for in-person lessons I generally negotiate a public meeting location with which both my student and I can feel at ease. Then I simply bring along whatever basic tools I think will be necessary for the lesson. However, I am experienced with online teaching, both chat-room style and video conferencing style, and a student who finds meeting in person inconvenient may request this method of instruction. I will be only too happy to oblige. In any case, I may be reached at any hour by email and between the hours of 10:00 am and 8:00 pm by phone for any questions or concerns.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your language learning goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taken the ACT five times since age twelve earning a 24, 26, 28, and two 30s respectively and am familiar with the exam procedure and the free resources available for practicing beforehand. I can also help with test strategy.

English

I have a master's level education, extensive study of languages and experience with different teaching methods, and tutoring experience in languages, grammar, reading comprehension, and essay composition and proofreading.

Greek

I have been studying Ancient Greek since 2007. I tutored in the subject from 2009 to 2013 at Texas A&M University, although I only began to be paid for it in 2011. I graduated magna cum laude from that same university with a Classics degree focusing on Greek, continuing afterward with a Master's program at The University of Nottingham where I studied ancient history and continued studying Greek. Most recently, I taught beginner's Greek to a struggling high-school student when his instructor, who was also my high-school Greek instructor, referred him to me.

Japanese

I have three years of study and a minor in the subject, as well as four years of tutoring and teaching experience.

Latin

I have nine years of study in the subject and an undergraduate degree in Classics which required the study of Latin as part of the major. Additionally, I tutored in Latin at Texas A&M University for almost two years.

Proofreading

I have a Master's level education as well as experience tutoring in proofreading at the college level.

Reading

I have a master's level education, extensive experience studying language arts, and six years of tutoring experience in language.

Writing

I have a master's level education, extensive study of language arts, and experience tutoring in essay writing and proofreading.
