About Meghan

I am a recently retired elementary teacher with experience at all levels of Kindergarten through Sixth grade. I have a lot of strength in the areas of Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and ESL. I like to make the subject come to life as much as possible, because it can be hard for struggling learners to comprehend when they are feeling completely lost. I work to find what each child's method of learning is and adapt to them. I have a vast knowledge of simplified test taking skills as well. I can also tutor elementary math, but it was not one of the subjects that I taught readily. However, I do understand many concepts of today's math that many parents may scratch their heads and wonder about with today's curriculum.

I am friendly and open with each learner developing a relationship with them. If a child doesn't like a subject, diving into it doesn't always work. Learning what the child likes and dislikes about the subject and what their strengths and weaknesses are helps me to empathize with the struggles the learner has with a subject and gauge my tutoring toward their needs. To help and encourage a student gain understanding in the subject area is beneficial to me. A child needs to not only achieve success, but also feel it. Your child's education is important, as each level is a stepping stone to the next. I want to be that tutor to help your learner advance.

I have a BS and MEd in Elementary Education and am qualified to teach any subject in the elementary curriculum. I have a vast amount of experience and have go to workshops and professional development seminars to learn and keep abreast of subject. I have taught all elementary grade levels throughout my career, and have studied child development to understand the stages of a child's growth and comprehension in learning.

New Learners!! Have you ever struggled in a subject and can't quite get it? I can help you in that area, because I can relate to you. Remember that even though I may be older than you, learning is something we all do. I continue to learn, and I want you to know that you are like a sponge soaking up a lot of information to use for your benefit as you get older. School and studying doesn't have to be hard. Contact me and lets see what we can do together to help you find success. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was an elementary school teacher for 31 years teaching in a self-contained and departmentalized K-6 setting. My classroom included students of all academic levels and abilities. I taught them at their academic level while maintaining the integrity of their chronological age. This is important as all kids can learn. It just means finding their academic level and encouraging them through expectations to achieve what they are capable of doing.

Phonics

I have taught lower elementary school and ESL for years and the knowledge of phonics is necessary for any child who is learning to read. They need to know the sounds each letter makes and all the differentiated forms of the American English language there are. For example, the use of blends and diphthongs, and spellings that make up our complex language. Phonics is a fundamental concept and subject necessary for a child to fluently read, but also comprehend a word.

TAKS

TAKS is not a relevant test anymore. The current test students take in the state of Texas is the STAAR. I have taught the TEKS, which are aligned to the STAAR test, it it is beneficial for the student, to know that I am aware of how the format of the test is given. I also am able to look the test up online to see if the format has changed with the testing questions. I have spent years developing simple systematic strategies to help students simplify the answers in a format they are capable of understanding. Many times, the testing is too wordy and the kids get caught up in the question stems. I can help with that, and finding the correct answer to the questions.
