About Dawn

Teachers need to "Pitch it where they can hit it." We need to find out what our student needs are and how we can meet them. "If they can't learn the way we teach, then we must teach them the way they learn."

Hi, My name is Dawn. I truly believe learning is possible for all children if it is done with patience and care. Children are not learning disabled, they are " Learning strategy disabled." Every student needs to be taught strategies that are compatible with the way they think and learn. Once appropriate techniques are taught, I truly believe that learning problems will diminish.

Everything I teach is hands on and I tend to use a lot of visuals. Depending on your child's learning style, I am able to meet their needs effectively using a multisensory approach. I like to be in constant contact with your child's teacher as their input is invaluable and helps me in guiding my instruction.
I am an elementary teacher certified in the areas of general education, English as a Second Language, and special education. I have worked with students identified as learning disabled, speech and language impaired, emotionally disturbed, ADD/ADHD and autistic. I have also adapted curriculum and modified instruction for those with an Individualized Education Plan(IEP). In addition, I currently work with groups of special education and general education students in a co-teach classroom. Main subjects taught are math, writing, and reading. I am currently a teacher in the Fort Bend Independent School District and I welcome the opportunity to work with your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I love kids and I am confident that my instructional abilities and experience will be an asset to them. By acknowledging many different and unique learning styles, I am able to meet my student's needs effectively. I always try to use various instructional methods to incorporate diverse activities and materials to engage my students and to make sure that they experience success. I am a certified teacher currently working within the Fort Bend Independent School District. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art in 1996 and then went on to receive my Master of Science in Special Education in 1998.

Certifications include Elementary Self-Contained grades(1-8) and Generic Special Education(PK-12) and English as a Second Language. I worked as a 1st-5th Special Education Resource Teacher in Galena Park ISD between the years of 1999-2005. Soon after, in 2005, I went on to Indianapolis, Indiana where I became the 4th and 6th grade inclusion teacher for the Wayne Township School Corporation. Presently I am a co-teacher for grades 3rd, 4th and 5th in Missouri City, TX. In addition, during the second semester,I am always busy tutoring several students after school in preparation for the STAAR test. I love working with students one on one and I hope to instill in them a love of learning and a desire for constant knowledge.

Special Needs

In 1998 I received a Master of Science in Special Education. Thereafter, I became a 1st-5th resource teacher in the Galena Park Independent School District. I then went on to be a 4th and 6th grade inclusion teacher for the Wayne Township School Corporation. I worked with kids who were identified as autistic and had learning disabilities. This was a different experience for me because in Indiana children with disabilities are expected to take the same state exam as the general Ed population. They did not take a modified version of the test and were expected to pass. My job was to prepare them for the ISTEP which was the state test. That was certainly a challenge but, I am pleased to say that most of them were successful especially in math. Presently, I am back in Texas working as a resource teacher and co-teacher within the Gen Ed classroom for 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Certifications include Elementary Self-Contained grades (1-8) and Generic Special Education (PK-12) and English as a Second Language. I have worked with students identified as learning disabled, speech and language impaired, emotionally disturbed, Intellectual disabilities, ADD/ADHD and autistic. I have provided services to special education students within the general education classroom and adapted curriculum and modified instruction for those with an Individual Education Plan(IEP). In addition, I have incorporated goals and objectives into classroom instruction and worked with small groups of special education students in after school tutorial programs. I love working with kids one one and one and welcome the opportunity to work with your child.
