About Dan

I have taught English in classes and in private tutoring, for the last six years. The youngest student was 9, but most of my tutoring experience is with adults. My formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. I joke that I have studied English for 16 years; but, it is true.

It isn't just about teaching English. I also encourage students to believe in themselves and their ability to learn. I started teaching ESL at the Pharr Literacy Project. My graduation rate was higher than 95%. I've also taught small groups and individuals frequently throughout the McAllen and PSJA area.

My strengths are: I speak English without a regional accent. I am patient and flexible, with a great sense of humor. I work very hard to adapt to each student's level of understanding, and to their learning style. One more benefit: I have a wide range of experience throughout my life and can help students understand business English and practices as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Although I studied Liberal Arts at Asbury College, my major was in Bible studies. Then I earned a Master of Theology degree from Covington Theological Seminary. I have pastored 3 churches.

ESL/ESOL

I have studied English for 16 years and have taught English to children and adults for four years, both in the classroom and as a private tutor.

Public Speaking

My primary experience in public speaking is pastoring and preaching. I have developed methods for preparation to speak and to overcome fear of public speaking. Part of my experience as a minister is in officiating weddings. I've conducted more than 650 marriage ceremonies.

I have also completed the Dale Carnegie Course on Public Speaking, and I completed the Instructor course for Dale Carnegie's Course. I've also had experience in sales. In college I had several courses on public speaking, debate and communications. These studies give depth to my understanding of public speaking.

Reading

As a teenager I had friends who were deaf. I've studied English for 16 years, and spelling and reading were strengths from early grade school.

Religion

One of the advantages of a liberal arts college degree program is the exposure to a variety of perspectives. So, even though I majored in Bible during my college studies, I also had the benefit of broader perspectives in literature, history and philosophy.

My studies in seminary gave me a comprehensive understanding of Christianity. I earned the Master of Theology degree, and I have pastored 4 congregations. Because it has always been important to me to know the "why", I have studied many other religions, including: Judaism, Islam, mysticism and gnosticism.
