Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am certified to teach ELAR and have done some tutoring for college entrance exams.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by the state of Texas to teach elementary education through 8th grade. I am also certified thru Sylvan Learning Centers to teach beginning and elementary reading, writing and math. I have taught letter recognition and letter sound association and have successfully taught or helped to teach children to read. I use phonics and music to teach early learners and a combination of learning strategies and technology to teach comprehension skills to those students who already read.

With math I use hands on and rote strategies with a lot of problem solving and reasoning skills.

At each level I help the student take ownership of their learning and teach them to expect themselves to succeed.

Elementary Math

I have many years experience in elementary math from number recognition to operations and problem solving. I have worked with Special Needs students as well as Regular Education students. I have been trained in Sharon Wells and other strategies to help the student "see" the process and learn how to manipulate the numbers.

English

I have taught English and reading to first time learners (young learners), Second language learners from children to adults, in the classroom and private students. I can help you improve your language, vocabulary and grammar at whatever level you are.

Hard Of Hearing

I am a certified Deaf Ed teacher with training in Oral and Manual Communication.

Phonics

I began to use phonics in teaching reading as a Deaf Ed teacher. We used hand signals to represent sounds to help the children learn to say the words. Now I depend heavily on phonics when teaching reading and writing, helping the child to listen to the sounds they hear to decipher or spell a word. I teach the different rules associated with the sounds as well as the different combinations that can make the same sound. I think phonics are a very useful tool, especially for learning to read and spell.

Reading

I am experienced in teaching reading from the earliest reader using phonics and context clues to decode words, to the advanced reader who needs to polish his strategies for increased comprehension.

I believe reading is the key to successfully learning all subjects.

SAT Reading

I have been doing group and individual test prep for 8 years. I am very enthusiastic about helping students succeed.

Social Studies

I hold a Texas State Certification in Social Studies. I have knowledge of Texas and U.S. History and have taught both in public and private school classrooms. I can teach by teks, assist with AP or SAT testing or simply employ some games to help with memory of the most important people and events.

Study Skills

I have been a teacher and a tutor for 13 years. I have taught week long camps in study skills for Sylvan Learning. I can help you with note taking, organization and even how to read for learning...to ask questions and get answers as you read.

Writing

I have a lot of experience tutoring and teaching writing. I am certified in English, Language Arts and Reading at your son's grade level. I teach the writing program at Sylvan Learning Center.
