About Nicole

Hello! My name is Nicole, and I'm very excited to begin working with you. I have been teaching ages Pre-K through eighth grade for about five years now. I teach and tutor using creative, researched-based strategies. I gear the resources and strategies I use to fit the interests and needs of each learner. With a variety of examples, practice, and helpful feedback, my students have been successful in making continued progress towards their learning goals.
Your goal is my goal, because I am here to help YOU. That's my favorite part about being a tutor. That moment when hard work, perseverance, and teamwork pays off and the student has that "Ah ha" moment. The student has experienced success when he/she has previously experienced frustration. I am committed to helping you reach your goals.

I have been teaching elementary math full time for two years, including tutoring sessions both before and after school every day. I have tutored math via "Skype" and in person in various settings like small group, rotating stations, and one to one. I recently completed my masters in mathematics curriculum and instruction, so I use the latest ideas, strategies, and research to continue learning as a mathematics teacher.

Beginning in middle school, I was a writing tutor/proofreader. Though high school and college, I worked in the various learning and writing centers to help students with essays and papers. Various focal points include spelling, grammar, organization, expanding on ideas, and proofreading final drafts.

During my time as an undergrad student, I tutored in the K-6 setting for both reading and math, including the resource room for students with learning disabilities. As a teacher in the classroom, I have tutored math, reading, science and social studies in the elementary setting.

My bachelor's degree specialized in learning disabilities, including ADD and ADHD. My studies in this program focused on the inclusion of students with ADD and ADHD in the general education setting and how to provide strategies and classroom management techniques which cater to the learner's individual needs. Through my career as a learner and as a teacher, I have acquired numerous learning strategies. With a smile, I will continue working with each learner until he/she finds the strategies that work best.

After reading my profile, I hope you find my experience and qualifications promising. I look forward to hearing from you soon, so we can begin progressing towards your learning goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In 2013 I completed my degree in elementary education K-8 and special education (learning disabilities) K-12 from Cornerstone University. I completed and passed the Michigan teacher certifications for both elementary education and special education. In addition, I have also passed teacher certification testing for the state of Texas. My student teaching experience was in a resource room, which pulled out and pushed in for students with a variety of learning difficulties such as ADD/ADHD. Two years of teaching in an inclusive classroom has provided me with many strategies to use with students who struggle with ADD/ADHD and how to assist them with progressive learning.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated in 2013 with a bachelors in elementary education K-8 from Cornerstone University in Michigan. I taught fifth grade for two years. During those two years, I completed online classes and earned my masters degree in mathematics curriculum and instruction from Concordia University-Portland. While teaching full time, I also tutored struggling students before and after school. I tutored during summer school for fourth and fifth grade students, preparing and reviewing for their state standardized testing as well.

Salsa Dancing

I have studied Latin dance for three years now. My introduction to Latin music and Latin dancing began in college with Zumba. From there I moved to Texas and studied Latin dancing, specifically salsa (on one and one two) and bachata. I learned from professional dancers who travel the country, and even dancers who travel around the world, competing and teaching. My experience comes from studio lessons, dance workshops, dance conferences, and social dancing time. Since returning home, I have joined two Latin dance groups in Michigan, including Michigan State University's Salsa Club, to continue practicing and teaching the basics of Latin dancing to beginners.

STAAR

During the academic school year, I administered the initial fifth grade STAAR test for reading, math, and science. I administered the fifth grade second STAAR test at the end of the school year. Additionally, I have administered the eighth grade STAAR math test at the conclusion of summer school. I have also helped fourth, fifth, and eighth grade students prepare and study for their STAAR testing, including test-taking strategies.
