About Ryan

At this time, I'm looking to tutor in many subjects, especially ones related to languages. I've been very deeply involved in creative writing for many years now (I'm most inclined to write poems and songs but also like to write prose sometimes) and scored 740 (99th percentile) on the GRE two times; so I have no doubt that I could handle any linguistic challenges thrown my way. I also know several foreign languages and would love to use my knowledge for other's benefit. The two I'm completely fluent in would be Korean and German, which was my official major, but I also can read and write Spanish well and have taught some Spanish classes at the very elite high school I worked at in South Korea. I can read Chinese pretty well, too, if anyone wants to learn that.

I've been teaching foreign languages (Spanish and English) for the past 6 years. First, I taught in a Korean public elementary for 3 years. Then I spent the next 2 years in a Korean foreign language high school (one of the best in a country of VERY HIGH educational standards). Last year, I was a German teacher in Texas.
In that job, I also had to sub in the regular classes often. Honestly, I like working with those subjects, too, especially math.
I'm a very "personable" person and take a very personal approach to foreign language teaching. That is, I like to find out what students are interested in/what experiences they have, follow suit with my story, and then branch off from that. I think students learn material much better if the material is relevant to them!

I moved to Texas last year and am now looking for a German teaching job in the Austin area. I am in the process of certification in German EC-12 and EC-6 generalist. I passed the content tests for my certification.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I've studied Chinese independently and/or with Chinese friends since 2002. In the past 2 years, I've had a particularly high level of exposure, as I've worked with Chinese teachers and had many Chinese students in my Korean foreign language high school. Simply put, I'm at an intermediate level overall, with my best skills in vocabulary and reading. I have learned how to speak through Pinyin and also Rosetta Stone, but pronunciation of Chinese is definitely still difficult sometimes. I can't write much Chinese but can write out all my ideas in Pinyin.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a teacher at a public elementary school in South Korea for three years, and have about six years of overall experience in the education industry. Besides working in the elementary, I also taught at a foreign language (intensive and very elite) high school in South Korea, and at private institutes for students of all ages from elementary through adult. Right now, I'm getting certified as a teacher in Texas. I passed the Elementary generalist/ESL test, and am now going through a training program.
As for my education, I won a National Merit award for my SAT scores while in high school, and got scholarships to the Univ. of Hawaii graduate school and Butler University (studied pharmacy there).

Elementary Math

In my student days, I was on the Math Academic Bowl teams and was once voted Math Student of the year. My Math score on the GRE was 730 (out of 800). I'm especially good at calculation and can do several digit multiplications in my head. Like many to most adults, I haven't many of my skills much after school, but I have a good math background and went up to the 2nd year of calculus.

ESL/ESOL

I taught in this field in S. Korea for six years and plan to continue in America the following school year. I passed the Texas certification test this month. I have taught all age groups, with my last job being at a high school. I am fluent to knowledgeable in four foreign languages and thus fully understand about many linguistic differences.

Korean

I rated level 4 in the TOPIK Korean test which is equivalent to high-intermediate or low advanced.

SAT Reading

I was a National Merit Scholar and scored in the 99th percentile on the GRE verbal.

SAT Writing

I have been doing creative writing for almost 20 years and have been published multiple times. Also, I scored in the 99th percentile on GRE English two times. I was a high school teacher at an elite high school in S. Korea before moving back to America.

Spanish

I started to study Spanish about 10 or 11 years ago. Now I like Spanish a lot and want to teach it again. Last year I used it often while teaching in a mostly Hispanic (many teachers and almost all students) school. I am looking for students who are up to the 3rd year in Spanish at school.
I am at the High Intermediate level on the DELE.

Hace casi 10 o 11 años empecé a estudiar español. Ahora me gusta mucho español y quiero enseñarlo otra vez.

Writing

I've been doing creative writing since I was a teenager and have been published. Also, my GRE English score was 99th percentile both times I took it, and I've taught speech and debate and been a college writing tutor. So I have no doubt that I can help with any verbal tasks you have.

I'd like to show a poem, just to show that I'm not making it all up.....and to wash away all this marketing of self.

There's nothing so great to say
that it can't be washed away
There's nothing so great to see
that it measures up to a good dream
There's nothing so strong to feel
that it can't become weak
once you're totally healed
There are too many people in this world,
and eventually one will accidentally steal
your stable sense of self

There's not so much meaning
That's how it seems
when you don't read between the lines
There's no way to be yourself
That's how it seems
when you master giving others your time
There's no way to not repeat another
That's how it seems
when you break out of your shell
There's no way for everyone to do well
Some have to fail, and if strong enough
they will live to tell
the most fascinating of stories

Ryan is helping my daughters learn Korean. He has great focus and after the initial few lessons, the girls are still very enthusiastic about them. Kudos to Ryan for building their self-esteem and piquing their natural curiosity as he educates them about the Korean culture and language.
