Bio

The web is an amazing place, full of potential. This captivated me from an early age; I taught myself how to build a web page using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript before I entered high school because I was always a curious kid, wanting to know how things worked. I continued my self-directed learning through high school, adding PHP and MySQL to my toolkit, and before long I found work putting it all to use, and have been doing that off and on ever since. The skillset I've developed centers around building well-architected code that is modular, testable, readable, and maintainable.

I want to share this gift of web programming with you, as the possibilities of what you can do with it are practically limitless. I prefer a student-directed method of learning, where I function as a guide -- as I believe this makes learning less of a chore and increases the effectiveness. I have also found that it helps to center this type of learning around projects, so that there is an inherent purpose behind each thing that is learned. With these two factors in place, I believe homework, and the motivation to get it done, will take care of itself.

My qualifications primarily boil down to job experience: I've been building websites for over 10 years using the knowledge I gained from teaching myself.
In terms of my educational background: in high school I had two years of Computer Science (Pre-AP and AP) where I learned Java, and I also have an Associate's degree in Computer Networking (Cisco option) from Kilgore College. Incidentally, as part of that degree I took courses in C, C++, PHP, and MS Access.

My goal is to empower my students with a solid theoretical foundation while building things that capture their interest. I teach programming skills that can be applied in any language. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Let's start your future today!

CSS

I've been developing websites for over 10 years, often using raw CSS with no frameworks (like Bootstrap) or preprocessors (like Sass). In the last 5 years, I've taught myself Sass, created a small library which I uploaded to GitHub, and then put it to use at a Drupal firm for 2.5 years. I've also studied different methodologies such as BEM, OOCSS, SMACSS, and ITCSS, ultimately deciding that ITCSS is what I prefer. I am also experienced with tools, such as Gulp and Laravel Mix, that are capable of running CSS preprocessors (or even PostCSS) as one part of a build process that takes development website assets and prepares them for use on an active site.
