About Stephanie

Hi! My name is Stephanie, and I am currently a Molecular Biology pre-med sophomore at Princeton University interested in tutoring during my summer break. My top subjects include both SAT and ACT Math, ACT Science, Biology, Calculus, and General Chemistry. During the academic year I work as a General Chemistry and Biology peer tutor at the on-campus tutoring center, and I love utilizing my former experiences to help and teach current students. I also volunteered as a peer tutor in high school via the AVID program.

Because mathematical understanding was integral to success in my science classes in both high school and university, I focused on learning for understanding as opposed to learning to pass exams, which I believe has been very useful when teaching other students strategies and techniques needed for academic success in their math classes. The tutoring method that I have the most experience in involves utilizing what the student already knows in order to foster confidence with the subject material as well as problem-solving skills that are helpful in exam situations.

I have a strong science background stemming from both my high school and college curricula and I am sincerely passionate about these subjects as well. I've noticed that success in these subjects stems more from the understanding of the mechanics, whether it be of a biological system or just the scientific method, which is why I aim to make sure my tutees understand the core principles that eventually help them tackle more abstract and conceptual problems.

Feel free to contact me about questions relating to times, scheduling, and other possible subjects that were not included in the principal bio! I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I took the ACT Test + Writing for the first time in my junior year of high school (February 2014) and scored a 35 on the English section. My classes at both McKinney High School and Princeton University have cultivated my skills reading comprehension and analysis of humanities-based literature as well as my skills in building confidence and developing strategies in order for the tutee to succeed in this exam section.

ACT Math

I took the ACT Test + Writing for the first time in my junior year of high school (February 2014) and scored a 35 on the Math section. I received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam and did well in college-level Calculus I at Princeton University.

ACT Reading

I took the ACT Test + Writing for the first time in my junior year of high school (February 2014) and scored a 36 on the Reading section. As a liberal arts university student, I have extensive knowledge in reading comprehension and analysis of both scientific and humanities-based literature.

ACT Science

I took the ACT Test + Writing for the first time in my junior year of high school (February 2014) and scored a 34 on the Science section. As a Molecular Biology major at Princeton University, I have a lot of experience in reading comprehension and analysis of scientific literature as well as familiarity with many of the experiments and processes that are displayed in this section.

Biology

I took the AP Biology exam as a sophomore in high school and received a score of 5. I also have experience in college-level ecology, evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, and molecular biology. I am currently a Molecular Biology student in university and tutor the subject on-campus as well, focusing on learning acquisition and application as well as student confidence. I have a deep understanding of both the basic and advanced mechanics, and I'm able to integrate both levels of comprehension into my tutoring sessions.

Calculus

I received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam and an A in college-level Calculus I at Princeton University. My approach to tutoring mathematics, especially calculus, relies more on tutee application, mostly doing practice exercises to build confidence and familiarity with the subject material, as opposed to mere tutor instruction. I've found this technique especially helpful and one of the common factors between the two incredible calculus teachers/professors that I have had.

Chemistry

I am currently a Molecular Biology student at Princeton University and tutor general chemistry on-campus, focusing on learning acquisition and application as well as student confidence. As a biology major and a pre-med student, I have taken both general and organic chemistry and have an understanding of both the basic and advanced mechanics, and I'm able to integrate both levels of comprehension into my tutoring sessions.

Grammar

My training in proper English grammar started from my advanced English class in 8th grade and I have been cultivating this skill ever since. I sincerely enjoy understanding the mechanics of grammar as well as the colloquial misunderstandings with which most students have trouble, and I am comfortable with editing essays while still preserving the student's voice.

Proofreading

I have a lot of experience in proofreading various works, including resumes, college-entrance essays, personal statements, and class essays. I have a strong grammatical background am very comfortable with editing essays while still preserving the author's voice.

SAT Math

I have extensive experience in preparing for the SAT Math section as well as the SAT Math I Subject Test. As a molecular biology major at Princeton University, I have a strong background in mathematics-based curricula and enjoy tutoring students through practice and application of commonly-seen questions.
