About Charla

An Art tutor must be a skilled tightrope walker. I skillfully and intuitively balance teaching skills & techniques while simultaneously letting the students own style emerge. This is vital to their artistic gifts surviving and growing. I believe in the therapeutic value of art as well as the creativity it unlocks in life. We will explore methods taught by the masters in a way that is both challenging and fun. My teaching is not always conventional, I am willing to adapt and change to teach in a way that speaks to each individual student. The continued growth of the student is always my main priority.

I spent 2 semesters student teaching art at the middle school and high school levels. What I believe sets me apart as a tutor is the 3 1/2 years I spent working full-time at a girls home in Columbus, GA. There I facilitated art therapy groups under the supervision of a Licensed Counselor. I also taught the girls a variety of art skills on weekends and after school. Many of the girls had behavioral challenges that I helped steer to art as a healthy alternative. I have a passion for students, having also spent time as a Youth Pastor and a Fine Arts coach for 10 years. During these formative years, a student's self confidence is trying to thrive in this tough world. I love that fanning the flame of their talents perpetuates a positive self image.

I have over 110 hours towards my BFA in painting/drawing. I began my studies in graphic design and changed to fine arts the 2nd half of my Junior year. I have attended 3 Universities in my journey to complete my degree, so I have had a wide variety of instructors to shape my teaching philosophy. I am skilled in acrylic and oil painting on canvas and wood. I have experience in 2D and 3D design, life drawing, printmaking, jewelry design, photography and ceramics.

I would love to spend time with you- finding out what you would like learn. I would then create specific lessons to help instruct, reinforce, and challenge your ability. Let's watch your skills grow and your confidence soar!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I changed majors from graphic design to painting/drawing during my junior year. I had a breakthrough during a figure drawing class, and found my style. I paint on a very large scale in which drawing plays a vital role. I draw a variety of figures and scenes and combine as one composition. I am skilled in pencil, charcoal, conte, prismacolor.

After taking a class in painting my junior year, I knew I had found my true love! I then changed majors from graphic design to painting/drawing. I passed my Senior Portfolio review at Columbus State University, but my studies were put on hold following a tragic death in my family. Subsequently, I moved back to Texas. I have recently made a career change and plan to complete my degree.

Theatre

I worked in the Fine Arts department at North Highland Church for 10 years. The church had over 2000 members and a 300 student youth ministry.
During my time there I co-directed the student Fine Art teams in group and individual dramas and Human video. We competed in the state completion which had a different theme each year. I co-wrote the dramas and human videos to fit the current theme. We took a team to the National competitions every year. We won multiple merit awards and 2 human video teams won 1st place, earning them scholarships. I was a state judge for Art and Short Sermon for 8 years.
I acted in monthly dramas for church services and played Mary, the mother of Jesus, in large scale Easter productions held at the Columbus Civic Center.
