I have five years of experience as a certified high school mathematics teacher in Texas. During those years, I taught Geometry, Pre-AP Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB, and STAAR EOC Algebra I test preparation. I've worked very close with other teachers on my team to better understand the connections between mathematics courses and to develop environments that were helpful to our students. I also coached math teams for both state and national math competitions: UIL number sense, mathematics, calculator applications, and the American Mathematics Competition. I continue to have an interest in furthering my own math problem solving skills, and it does make me more quick to explain concepts to students in a clear way.

Before teaching, I did tutoring for college students in a variety of courses: college algebra, calculus I, calculus II, multivariable calculus, differential equations, matrix theory, and linear algebra.

I currently work as a lead math curriculum writer, where I read and analyze content standards for elementary and secondary mathematics to develop problems and content for multi-state products. Those products include online programs for standards mastery throughout the year as well as test preparation materials (benchmarks). It's a fantastic job, and it challenges me daily to find the best ways to teach a concept.

I like tutoring sessions to be very student-driven. As I see students work through problems, that gives me an idea of where we need to make stronger connections, and I can provide some advice about what to focus on from there. I like to see what resources the students have on hand for the course (textbooks, handouts, notes) as we work. My philosophy is that we are working together with the teacher to supplement, not replace, what is going on in the classroom. I tend to write a lot of notes during a tutoring session, mostly work from problems, and I always let the student walk away with that in hand. I always want to see some kind of improvement from session to session, so I strive to offer advice on valuable things to work on in the meantime.

My work day leaves me open for late afternoon or evening sessions throughout the week, and I can usually spare some time on the weekends. I'm open to discussing options, but I ask that you provide me the courtesy of at least an 8 hour notification if we have to cancel a session.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I hope we can work together to help you build your knowledge and find the success you desire!

Great session!

My child had her first session with Michael in geometry and he did a fantastic job of filling in some pretty major gaps that her classroom teacher couldn't address.

Great First Session

We had a wonderful first session. Will definitely be calling on Michael again. My son felt he learned more in one night than so far this year at school

Michael is an Excellent Tutor

Michael is well prepared and knows Calculus very well. Most importantly, he is patient and able to help me understand difficult concepts. With his help, I managed to get a 98 on my Calculus I final exam.

The best tutor!!

Michael goes above and beyond what is expected of him. I am very grateful to have found a tutor that not only knows how to teach, but offers his assistance in other ways such as, talking to my child's teacher, and offering help during his off time. Michael has taught my child more in two sessions than her teacher has in 6 weeks. I highly recommend him as a tutor.
