I have worked as a reading tutor for many years, having been certified in the Read Right program. I have worked with adult students seeking their GED certificate, ESL learners, teenagers seeking their GED certificate, and elementary students who are lagging in their reading. I currently substitute teach in both public and private elementary schools. I tutor all elementary school subjects, high school and college English, writing, and language arts.
I also provide tutoring for most standardized tests including but not limited to GED, SAT, AVSAB, and others. My students' scores always improve.
It is very rewarding to work with students and watch them achieve their goals and move forward in life. Individual tutoring can make an amazing difference in a child's school experience by infusing the child with confidence in their ability to succeed. Adults become better employees when their skills in reading, writing, and math improve.
I believe that all people must be proficient readers to achieve their dreams and realize their full potential.
My other work experiences include directing two after school programs and serving as the executive director of an non profit agency. However, my love is tutoring individuals or small groups. Stacey is helping my daughter in the reading area. My daughter has improved a lot, she used to hate to read and now she is loving it, she got really excited when we arrived at the public library to checkout books. Stacey is motivating her to read and has help her a lot. I am really happy and i hope that when she enters to school she will be reading at her grade level.
My son left extremely excited after meeting with Stacey! She is very knowledgeable and works well with students! He is looking forward to meeting her again.
Stacey tutored my son with his English Literature AP Senior Class. He was struggling in the structure of prose essays. Stacey encouraged my son to become more concise and detailed in his essays. She helped him put the ideas in a more organized way. Stacey gave him a boost of confidence that my son needed. Now his grades have improved in the areas of analyzing novels and taking them to the next level in a prose essay analysis. We are thankful with Stacey's patience and encouragement. We highly recommend her.
Stacey has helped me a lot in my journey of getting my GED! She has done a wonderful job of helping me and is a wonderful person inside and out.
Stacey is a good teacher, she is very kindly, patient and she explain very well. We were working with grammar exercises and reading. She help me to improve my resume. We were working to practice how can I explain my experience job.
My husband and I have a 8 yr old son who unfortunately has had problems with his reading. We have tried after school programs and have never really seen much improvement. So we decided to try private tutoring. We met Stacey for our first meeting and she made us feel at ease. She gave our son an evaluation and then proceeded to show us an example on how she would approach our son with his reading. We have been taking our son to Stacey's home now for about a month for 2 lessons a week. We have seen more improvement in this month alone and are very grateful. When he reads to us the homework assigned by Stacey, we can't help but smile. We are truly impressed with Stacey D.
This was my first time trying to hire a tutor off of a Google search but I have to say that I am delighted with Stacey D. She comes with a wealth of experience in the Read Right program as well as identifying potential causes of problems in reading fluency, comprehension, and processing. After one session, I already noticed my daughter more actively engaged in reading and putting more expression and fluency into her reading cadence. My daughter has ADHD and by the time Stacey comes, my daughter's meds have worn off and yet, my daughter can stay on task with Stacey and does not whine or complain (like she does with her mom...unfortunately). We are really looking forward to how far Stacey can take our daughter over the next months as she tries to catch up with her grade level in reading. I highly recommend Stacey if you have a child struggling to read, enjoy reading, or to read with fluency and comprehension.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored groups and individuals in English to prepare for GED testing, SAT testing, and ACT testing. English is a challenging language and requires effort to develop reading and writing proficiency.
I have tutored ADHD students in reading on an individual basis. ADHD students do well in a one on one learning environment. Consistency is very important as is continual positive feedback. Depending upon the student, shorter sessions may be a strategy.
The ASVAB is a standardized test very similar in nature to the college entrance exams such as the SAT. It is most helpful to use to assess the student's strength areas and those where much improvement is needed. It is important to understand how the test is scored as well. I have tutored students for the SAT exam both individually and in groups. It is important to use a study guide that gives sample tests and to review those thoroughly.
I have tutored students with dyslexia both individually and in groups. Generally individual tutoring works best because the student may feel pressure to keep up with the rest of the group. There is a range among those with dyslexia. Some students have difficulties with all areas while others may need to pay attention to only one area.
I have worked as a program director of two different after school programs where I was responsible for tutoring students and helping them with their homework. I am a certified Read Right tutor and have worked in public schools providing the Read Right program.
I have worked with elementary students both in after school programs and as a substitute teacher for the past four years. During these times, I was assisting students with their math.
I have taught all aspects of English to adults and children for many years. English is a complex language to accomplish, especially for second language learners. I use a variety of techniques to help students excel in their grasp of English. Since the advent of grammar and spell check, many students have not internalized some grammatic components as well as proper spelling, depending on the computer to catch and correct. It is important for learners to input this information into their brains as well as to press the proper computer key.
As a certified Read Right tutor, I have worked with both adults and children who are not able to read or write in English. I have taught GED classes to young adults who are not proficient in English. I currently substitute teach in a private school which has a strong emphasis on teaching English at a very early age.
I taught GED classes for Workforce for approximately two years so I am familiar with the preparation process. Many of these students were court ordered and not very motivated to study and learn; however, we had a good success rate in the two centers where I worked. Good reading and writing skills are absolutely necessary to passing this exam. Individual one on one tutoring can make a real difference in GED success.
Grammar is complex in English with many rules and quite a few exceptions. I have tutored students in grammar for many years. I use a variety of activities to engage students in learning proper grammar, especially for the exceptions.
I have been the director of two elementary after school programs. I have assisted many students with their handwriting in this capacity. In this day of electronic writing, it is equally important to learn how to write by hand.
I am a certified Read Right tutor. Part of my training for certification was in phonics. I also substitute teach for a private elementary school and teach phonics as part of my duties there.
Writing is an important component of the SAT. I have provided writing tutoring for students here in the Valley. Writing is a challenge that many public school students have here, especially ESL students. I enjoy helping students improve their writing.
I have worked with students with special needs in various settings. I have tutored adults with dyslexia in reading using the Read Right program. I have privately tutored elementary children with ADHD and developmental delays, primarily in the areas of reading, language acquisition, and writing. I currently substitute teach in both public and private elementary schools.
I have served as an after school program manager in two different programs serving elementary and middle school students. Each after school program had an academic component where homework was completed, other academic work was offered and graded and tutoring was provided. I provided the tutoring and supervised the homework help. In addition, I provided reading tutoring through the Read Right program at summer camp, in the after school program, and in an elementary school.
I have tutored students for a variety of tests including the SAT, the GED, the AVSAB, and the ACT. It is useful to have prepared study guides that explain in great detail how the test is structured and scored, as well as detailed guidance in each separate subject area. My students have all scored well.
I provide test preparation for a variety of standardized tests including the TEAS, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, TOEFL, and TAKS. I help students become aware of test taking strategies. I help them expand their knowledge base in the subject areas being tested. Using sample tests is an important aspect of preparation because the practice increases the student's self confidence.
English, language arts, vocabulary, and reading are my areas of strength, all of which are very necessary components of the TOEFL.
I have successfully helped students to achieve high scores and improve former test scores.
Writing is such an important method of communication, especially with today's "short cuts"... emailing, texting, and twittering. I have tutored students in writing for many years and bring that experience to each new student. It is important for all students to learn proper grammatical and creative writing skills. I use a variety of activities in order to engage students who are struggling with writing.
