About Sydney

I love to teach because learning is a valuable and necessary experience. Many students cling to the barest comprehension of a subject and are able to get by, but they don't really understand or retain the material. Some students are left behind entirely, subject to classroom pace and teacher availability. Tutoring offers the opportunity to help those who are struggling or even those who just seek a greater understanding of a subject.

I specialize in teaching English and related subjects such as writing, vocabulary, and grammar. However, I am able to teach History, Theatre, journalistic writing, and introductory French.

I attended an International Baccalaureate (IB) high school. I completed Higher Level (HL) courses in History, English, French, and Theatre; and Standard Level (SL) Courses in Chemistry and Calculus. I was awarded the IB Diploma, and graduated 8th in my class. I was lead editor for the school's newspaper for two years. I attend the University of Texas at Austin as a Longhorn Scholar, and will graduate with a B.A. in Rhetoric and Writing in 2016.

Whether in-home or in a common space like a library or school, I can tutor anywhere. I am willing to drive up to 25 miles from Marble Falls for an appointment. I have a three-hour cancellation notice, but am willing to reschedule.

I received high marks for my IB and AP English tests in high school (6 and 5, respectively), and made 700+ scores on the SAT in both Reading and Writing. My college English grades have consistently been in the A range as well. I have been published in magazines and various other publications, and can teach AP Style for journalism in addition to traditional English requirements.

I was active in theatre throughout high school, both as an actress and tech worker. I received a 6 on the HL Theatre exam. I also completed the Extended Essay (a thesis-style paper on one of six subjects) on avant-garde theatre and received top marks. I was awarded various UIL One-Act Play awards, including Best Actress. I can teach history, script analysis, provide acting direction, makeup/costume assistance, and set design.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Theatre

I was active in extracurricular theatre throughout high school, both as an actress and tech worker. I also had academic experience as a student in the HL Theatre course, a two-year program, and received a 6 on the exam. I also completed the Extended Essay (a thesis-style paper on one of six subjects) on avant-garde theatre and received top marks. I was awarded various UIL One-Act Play awards, including Best Actress.
