Courtney is certified in the state of Texas for 4th-8th grade English/Language Arts/Reading, including ESL supplemental certification. She also holds a Master's Degree in Language & Literacy Education from Texas Tech University. Courtney taught 5th-6th grade in public school for 5 years, and grades K-7 at a Montessori school in Houston's Museum District. In addition, she's tutored students from pre-k-college with Jane Cardwell Tutoring, Inc. (Houston, Texas), during after-school programming at several campuses, and now as the founder of Here to Help Tutoring of the Highland Lakes. Through her experiences, Courtney has found that the use of manipulatives, color, technology, and music tends to increase engagement for her students, especially in the elementary years. She is passionate about her work with students who are in need of additional support to help fill in gaps in their knowledge, build their strategies, and ultimately become confident and self-motivated learners.

Handwriting

While serving as the Upper Elementary guide at Montessori Country Day School in Houston's Museum District, I practiced handwriting (print and cursive) with my younger students (3rd-4th). Through tracing individual letters and short words, independent practice, tactile practice, and focused letter correction as needed, my students began to thrive as creators of beautiful print and cursive. Improved handwriting skills can be a surprising confidence builder for students of all ages.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have six years of experience in the public school system and 1 1/2 years in the private school system teaching and tutoring children/young adults with diagnosed ADD/ADHD. In working closely with parents/administrators and co-teachers to implement and carry out modifications and accommodations to instruction, we were able to greatly increase success factors for these learners. Examples of modifications and accommodations I use include checking with the student from time to time for understanding, increased one-on-one instructional time (or small group), providing multiple approaches to instruction (i.e. manipulatives, the use of technology in lessons, learn and teach a lesson to small group or class), eliminating distractions and external noises, and removing one answer choice for multiple choice response. Finally, touching on areas of high interest to the student tends to increase motivation and success with school work/learning.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Through my experience teaching in Texas public schools (5 years), I taught several students each year who were identified as dyslexic. I implemented/provided modifications and accommodations for this population in an inclusive education setting including: increasing the use of graphic organizers, giving step-by-step directions, allowing various response modes, encouraging use of tinted film for reading, giving handouts with extended text to reduce amount of copying done by student, allowing flexible deadlines for school work and homework submission, and many more. Through my experiences in classroom teaching and private tutoring with dyslexic individuals, I've learned some can be quite sensitive to academic "failures" and missteps. A patient mindset and calm, caring demeanor certainly go a long way with these students.

Test Preparation

STAAR,

STAAR

Through my experiences as a classroom teacher, I utilized TAKS/STAAR testing techniques each semester. I've also tutored students who were targeted for academic weaknesses based on benchmark test results. These group tutoring sessions occurred 2-4 times per week for an hour to two hours after school, depending upon need. I like to approach prep for standardized testing as simply another genre, as studied and practiced through my certification and Master's program (Language & Literacy Education, Texas Tech University). Preparation entails mini-lesson/review in areas of need and practice testing, then group review of the answers, and finally, discussing methods for choosing the correct answer (annotating while reading, eliminating wrong answers, rereading portions of text or questions as needed, checking math problems through reverse computation, etc.). With the STAAR test, reading prep must include focus on vocabulary because of the increased level of this test. For math STAAR, students must be prepared to solve multi-step problems which also require a higher level of critical thinking/problem solving. I've found focused test preparation to be highly beneficial, as each year my students' test results averaged higher than other students at their grade level.
TAKS,

TAKS

During my student teaching in Spring Branch ISD (5th and 7th grade Reading/ELA) and subsequent years as a classroom teacher, I practiced TAKS/STAAR testing techniques each semester, with heavy emphasis in the spring. Furthermore, I tutored students who were targeted for academic weaknesses based on benchmark test results. These group tutoring sessions would occur 2-4 times per week for an hour to two hours after school, depending upon need. Patient

Courtney was great for the first session with my extremely hyperactive and fidgety ADHD 6 year old. I look forward to many sessions with her and to watch my son grow and learn!

Courtney is working miracles

She is giving my daughter the foundation to learn the math she needs to know. She helps Michaella understand the "how" and the rest seems to be coming easy. We both are crazy about Courtney, she has great knowledge to go along with her great personality.

Wonderful

I was so worried about my nine-year-old son coming to a new town in a new school. He was a little bit behind as the school year started so I went looking for a tutor. I found Courtney and then a new concern arrived… How my son wouldn't respond to having a tutor. He came out of the first lesson got in the car and said "that was so much fun…! Do I get to go again? " that is all I needed to hear. ????

Doing an amazing job!

Courtney has been tutoring our 5 year old with reading and we have seen an amazing improvement! Courtney is patient and has a great ability for keeping our daughter focused. We would recommend her to anyone looking for someone to give that little extra help.

Great with 3 year old

Courtney was wonderful teaching Spanish to my 3 year old. She was very patient and energetic. She brought games and songs for them to play and always made learning fun. Although she is not a native speaker, she worked very hard at making sure she was teaching our child correctly. She even reviewed her lessons with me the day before to make sure I agreed with everything she would be covering the next day. We will miss seeing her smile every week. I highly recommend her to all families of little ones.
