My name is Daryl, I graduated from Texas A&M university in 2004, and I have been teaching for nine years. During my teaching experiences, I discovered that most people who struggle in math didn't understand a basic concept and the parts they struggle with are based on what they were missing. Teaching is my passion, because I love to see the light come on when someone has been struggling. I look forward to helping people become more successful. I believe that math is very basic as the answers never change. I keep math as simple as possible and use every day examples to help with understanding. Things like going to the grocery store, buying a gift for someone or putting gas in the car are things that I talk about. Students must also understand there there are only four basic things you can do with math: multiply, divide, add, and subtract. When students grasp this concept, they will become more skilled in mathematics.
As I mentioned before, I have taught for nine years, six years of pre-algebra and three years of algebra 1 and two years of algebra 2. Algebra is my strongest math, but I can also teach geometry, and I am proficient in trigonometry. I have had some very successful years including 71% passing the state assessment and another year 100% passing of the end of course exam. One of the things I did to help make my students successful is provide tutoring, either before school, lunch, or after school. Any student who received tutoring saw improvement in class.
One of my newest additions to teaching has been the use to technology. As the world becomes more technological, students have access to information that was not accessible in the past. When student are able to use technology such as smartphones to help them learn it not only saves money, time, and frustration, but also makes learning fun and exciting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
