About Carolyn

In addition to Statistics, math and science tutoring, I am interested in homeschooling a student whose parents are unable to do so. Ideally I would homeschool a 2016-2017 kindergartner along with my kindergarten daughter or a student going into 7th grade or older although I would homeschool for 1st-6th grade if that was needed.

I am a former teacher and taught 2nd grade, 5th grade math and science, junior high science and high school biology. I went to 2 years of graduate school and taught the Graduate Statistics Lab section for the 1st years as a 2nd year student. I was certified in Texas for Early Childhood through 4th grade, 5-8th grade math and science and 8-12 biology.

I love science and math and my favorite part of teaching was working with students independently or in small groups. In college, I majored in Psychology and minored in Biology with a focus in genetics, taking Advanced Genetics. I took Advanced Statistics while I was in Graduate School. When I was teaching science, it was mainly life and earth science subject areas. I loved statistics and am considering returning to school for a Masters.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I minored in biology as an undergraduate with a focus in genetics. I tutored in biology even as a high school student. I taught biology to high school students and was certified to teach it in Texas.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a 2nd grade teacher and taught all subjects including reading and math. I was certified in Texas to teach Early Childhood-4th grade and 4th-8th grade math and science. I currently tutor 4th grade math and language arts,

Elementary Math

I was a 2nd grade teacher, and I have taught math for state testing preparation through 8th grade. I also taught 5th grade math, and I currently tutor 4th grade math. I focus on understanding not only the mechanics of math but also the concepts behind the mechanics and how it interrelates.

Elementary Science

I taught 2nd grade as well as 5th grade science. I also taught 5th grade science and junior high science. I minored in biology and taught biology to high schoolers as well.

Phonics

I have been a 2nd grade teacher who taught remedial phonics to those in my class not reading at grade level. I am currently teaching my kindergartner and a 2nd grader using phonics. The program that I use for my own child teaches all the sounds of alphabet letters and is very systematic in its teaching. It also has a strong spelling component.

Statistics

I studied statistics as part of both my undergraduate work in psychology and my graduate work in developmental psychology. I took advanced statistics as a graduate student. I taught the lab section of the graduate statistics course to the 1st year graduate students as a 2nd year.

Patient and great communication!

We reviewed statistics class final exam prep. Carolyn helped provide some needed understanding and logic around some key components of the material that I was struggling with. She provided assistance with multiple ways of getting answers as well. Her delivery of the concepts were easily understandable and assisted in providing me with confidence going into the final.
