I recently graduated from the University of Colorado, with a major in in biomedical sciences and a minor in cognitive studies. I conduct and manage cellular and molecular neuroscience research at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver. I have learned (from experience) a wide range of study and learning skills, along with many effective approaches to face new challenges. I have worked with a diverse population of students, ranging from elementary age to college students. I specialize in elementary reading, particularly in fluidity and interpretation skills. I also specialize in chemistry and biology, at both a high school and college level.

The tutoring methods I use vary by each student. Some students prefer hands on learning, some prefer strict memorization, and some prefer a mixture of the two. Once I can determine which style is most effective, the student and I work together on tackling obstacles that are preventing the student's success in the subject. I highly value the student's input about their learning style and the efficacy of lessons; if a student or parent finds that lessons aren't effective, we will work together to form a new lesson strategy.

Elementary Science

As a member of the honors programs in middle school, high school, and college, I have been expected to take a high number of science courses and excel in each one. If these standards were not met, they would dismiss the student from the program. I learned new study methods and test preparation skills in order to achieve high grades in these courses, and I have passed these skills on to other students in preparatory sciences. These students, including my sister, showed a substantial jump in their percent grade in their science classes. Thank you for your time!
Reading,

Reading

Until fourth grade, I attended a private school, where the teachers were extremely fast paced regarding reading. I struggled for many years; however, once I learned how to truly comprehend the connection between letters and sounds, it was relatively easy, and from that point I was considered an "advanced reader." I also helped my younger sister, who is a selective mute and will simply not speak at school; therefore, she did not learn the necessary connections in language and she fell behind. After I helped her through reading and writing in primary school, the advanced elementary school a town over (which I attended) invited her to join their program.
Spelling,

Spelling

I have worked with many students on spelling and reading, including students with disabilities that might limit their learning of these subjects in the classroom.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

As a member of NHS and the top 2% of my graduating class, I had to hold high grades in all highschool courses, including algebra I-Calculus. I excelled in all four years of math that I took, and I hope I can share my study preparation skills.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

As a hopeful pre-med student, I have been required to take math classes through calculus. I took Algebra I and II, Pre-calculus and Calculus in high school, maintaining high grades in each class. I also tutored younger friends in high school when they were taking Algebra, and they seemed to think that my perspective on math helped them better understand the subject. Thank you for your consideration!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

Although a psychology major does not take many science courses, a hopeful pre-med student is treated as a science major. My electives are composed of classes like biology, chemistry, and soon physics. I took AP chemistry and AP physics in high school, and passed both AP tests. I have already taken General Chemistry in college, and I will be continuing with General Chemistry II this semester. In physics, geometry played a role in calculating forces, so I had to learn additional geometry (in addition to the geometry course I had already taken) in order to excel on the test. Thank you for your consideration!

As a high school student, I was in the AP program and I was a member of the National Honor Society. Along with these programs come many SAT bootcamps and SAT preparatory skills. I learned many ways, especially in the math section, to approach questions in a different manner to help me comprehend and and answer the question. Math is an extremely important skill, and helped me bring my SAT score very high (as I scored a 720/800 on the SAT math section). Thank you for your consideration!

Patient and knowledgeable tutor

Mikaela was patient with my 5 year old daughter. This was her first tutoring session and we didn’t know what to expect. She was knowledgeable and my daughter loved her session.

AMAZING NEUROSCIENCE TUTOR!

Mikaela is awesome! She helped me understand a really complex research paper by breaking information down in small pieces and use analogies to explain the confusing concepts. Not only she is kind and patient, but she is also knowledgeable and provided me extra feedback after the lesson! So if you have any questions on research, schedule a lesson with this amazing lady!
