Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I have been an editor for the past 8 years, which has included work on creating documents on my desktop using MS Word, Works, PowerPoint, and Excel. I can show you how to make flyers, scrapbooks, printed & bound cookbooks, announcements, memos, resumes, etc., using just your basic MS software at home.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught English one-to-one at the K-2 grade levels at Brown Elementary in Houston, TX. I also tutor all subjects at the elementary level, as well as study skills and test preparation.

Public Speaking

With my own debate and speech experience from high school and college, as well as my career experience with teaching and giving presentations to my peers in the professional world, I help students of all ages present themselves with confidence and clarity, without sounding like they are reading directly from a printed page.

Social Studies

I am most experienced teaching social studies at the middle school (grades 6-8) level. I can help students remember important dates with timelines, important facts for tests with flash cards, and I compare parallel events from yesterday with those of today to give history and civics greater relevance for today's student.

Study Skills

On the elementary level, I help students understand the importance of prioritizing tasks and accomplishing the hardest, not the easiest assignments first. At higher levels, I help students with more specific areas of study skills, such as note taking, test preparation, memorization, and timelines.

Helpful

Our son had three weeks until his SAT. Having spent a good part of a year focusing on math and lit, he hadn't spent any time on Essay prep. A couple of his teachers didn't have the time to help so having used Wyzant for Pre-Cal and Science, we thought we would look for Essay help too. We hadn't used online tutoring for Wyzant but we searched and received a response from Alison is about 10 minutes.
