Hi there!

My name is Mia and I am a senior at Texas Tech University, majoring in English with a concentration in Secondary Education and minoring in History. I intend to earn my teaching certification for grades 4th through 8th in Language Arts and Social Studies following my December 2017 graduation. As a young girl I had an incredibly passionate heart for learning and stories. I consistently sought new ways to tell my own stories and learn of others'. As an adult, my passion for learning and the story have only increased ten fold. It is my hope as a teacher that I will be able to instill and inspire others with the love for words that I have cherished over the years.

My experience tutoring includes both elementary aged students and advanced peers. I worked for some time at Gideon Math and Reading Center where, using the Gideon program, tutored students aged four to sixteen years in math, beginning reading, and reading comprehension. I additionally have helped peers in high school and college in the development and editing of large-scale papers. While working in retail at Michael's Arts and Crafts, even, I found myself leading Kids Club crafting lessons and events. I have consistently shown a commitment to helping others learn and have fun while doing so. From these experiences I have seen my own communication skills in leading students to their own conclusions and simplifying the complex dramatically increase. I have learned that tutoring for me is the opportunity for a team activity where I, as the tutor, and my student find new ways to communicate with one another and the material.

My experience and grasp of the material I tutor is deep rooted and extensive. As an English major and History minor I have gained irreplaceable experience writing in various styles. I am familiar with basic grammar, the fundamentals of linguistics, MLA, and APA writing formats. I have also been fortunate enough to participate in discussions regarding some of the best literary works of the English language. As I have seen in my own education, understanding a story's structure, language techniques, and history overwhelmingly enhance the reading experience. To take the next step and truly engage oneself in literature then depends on the reader applying the understanding gained from previously read texts to other texts of similar time, place, or theme to ultimately increase understanding and appreciation for the human experience. Although these elements may sound lofty they may easily be applied to any grade level and any reading. Overall, I believe reading and writing to be about making connections and analyzing those connections in relation to the human endeavor as a whole. As a teacher and tutor, I encourage my students to seek and celebrate such connections in order to truly develop a love and appreciation for the written word.

I would love to answer any further questions or concerns as well as work with you to insure that the best experience can be provided. If interested, please contact me to learn more about scheduled lesson times, lesson material, and more of my personal background.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration! I look forward to hearing from you soon!

As a tutor at Gideon Math and Reading Center, I learned the fundamentals of tutoring in elementary education. These fundamentals included handwriting, spelling, beginning reading, beginning test taking and grammar. Additionally, I have several years of personal experience helping my 11 year old brother and 9 year old sister in their studies. Although I am not majoring in Education specifically, my intention is to earn my certification for mid-level education, including grades 4th through 8th. As of now, my tutoring in elementary grades consists of several prep-hours in researching tactics, common core values, grade appropriate learning objectives, and practice techniques.

Very knowledgeable, patient and sweet tutor.

Mia worked with my daughter on college essays. She helped her structuring her words and ideas in a more flowing and meaning way. She was great to work with and gave her a lot of ideas on how to improve her writing skills. Her personality makes you connect with her instantly. Great job Mia!
