About Lindsey

Hi! I'm Lindsey, and I am so excited to be your reading tutor. I LOVE teaching reading and writing. I'm a fourth-year classroom teacher with years of experience in reading instruction, tutoring, and intervention. I've coached spoken word poetry teams, edited literary magazines, helped students with SAT preparation and college essay-writing, and I've worked with students with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities during the summer to help prepare them for the demands of the upcoming school year.

I love making real, genuine connections with students, and watching them grow. This is the foundation of my philosophy of teaching: kids simply don't learn from people they do not have positive relationships with. I believe reading and writing are doorways through which we get to know our worlds, ourselves, and one another. My role as an educator is to help students realize their dreams-- and literacy is crucial to that process!

I am an outstanding English teacher, and an outstanding English tutor. I attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and as a graduate student. There, I gained extensive knowledge of the world of literature, including young adult literature and best practices for both reading and literature instruction. I consider myself a lifelong learner; I'm always looking for ways to make my instruction more effective for my students, and for ways to help my students connect with their educations and their own potential. I've taught in lots of different kinds of schools during my career, which means I've taught lots of different kinds of kids-- and I've loved them all. I've won awards of excellence for my qualifications as well as for my work in the classroom, including scholarships and student-nominated awards from my school. I am an expert in my field, and I am passionate about teaching!

I'm trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach to Multisensory Literacy Instruction, and I've worked as a reading interventionist in both whole-class settings and one-on-one settings over the course of my entire career. I offer diagnostic and prescriptive reading instruction in phonemic awareness, spelling rules, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and writing, all of which is specifically tailored to the student. I deeply understand these students' strengths and needs, both from a scientific perspective and an interpersonal perspective. Teaching students with ADHD and dyslexia is my passion, and I am continually developing my knowledge of research-based practices to help these kids be successful!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I'm trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach to Multisensory Literacy Instruction, and have had many hours of supervised instruction in this method. It's designed specifically for kids with ADD/ADHD and dyslexia, among other specific learning differences. I have years of experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD, and modifying curriculum to ensure their maximum success.

Dyslexia

I have one year of experience as a campus dyslexia specialist for a 6th-12th grade school, alongside teaching dyslexia intervention classes and leading campus-wide training for teachers on helping students with dyslexia succeed. Reading

I have taught Reading Intervention classes for small groups of middle and high school students for the duration of my career. In addition, I piloted and managed a reading intervention program for at-risk middle school students during my first year of teaching.
