About Barbara

I am a retired teacher with many years' experience in all elementary subjects. I have taught in both private and public schools in Lubbock and the surrounding area. I love to work with students one on one, or perhaps, in a small group because I find it very rewarding to see, up close and personal, their growth and accomplishments. I currently work in my last school district doing substitute work, testing, and tutoring in math and language arts. I hold a Lifetime Texas Teachers Certificate in Elementary Education, and I've taught all the major subjects in grades K-6 as well as some upper level math.

I retired a bit early and have found that, as a retiree, I miss school! I now substitute at various schools and at all levels because I simply love working with children, and I love teaching.

I prefer working in person, but I would consider online learning. My hourly fee is $30. School is upon us, and it's time to refresh our brains!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 27 years of experience in teaching, primarily in the elementary classroom. I hold a lifetime Texas Teacher Certificate. In the eight years since my retirement I have tutored reading and math in grades 3-5 in a public school setting, as well as administering Texas achievement testing.

English

I've been teaching many subjects over the last few decades. English is one of my fields.

General Music

Upon entering Texas Tech with a voice scholarship I spent the next part of my education pursuing a degree in elementary education with music as my major teaching field. I taught public school music for ten of the twenty-seven years of my career. In addition, I have sung in many local musical productions as well as choirs. I also have a background in piano after taking lessons or 10 years.

Grammar

Good grammar, to the detriment of many, requires a working knowledge of the rules! I've taught grammar, off and on, for over thirty years. I always take the "tests" on FACEBOOK that score a person on the knowledge of those rules and get 100% every time. While that is certainly not an accredited test, it allows me to check myself in order to see if I'm still proficient and can apply the rules.

Music History

As a freshman in college I was a music major. I was required to take two semesters of music history and made "A's" both semesters. Then, as a senior, I was required to take advanced music history. As a senior I was also doing my student teaching and my grades in music history did not fare so well, but I did make passing scores. Because I found it interesting, I kept my college texts and have them to this day.

Voice (Music)

As a high school student I made the choice to major in music upon attending university. I was awarded a voice scholarship to Texas Tech University for my freshman year. I trained in the classic vocal tradition which included works in Italian and German, as well as in English. I've performed on the musical stage and in a premier church choir that, at the time, toured many of the Cathedrals in England. I also taught vocal music in the public schools for many years.
