About John

I will be graduating this December, 2014, from GSU with a BA in Applied Linguistics. I will be earning a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) as well. Additionally, I will earn a minor in Music. Formerly a violinist at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati before transferring to GSU, I have extensive experience in music and music education. I also have experience playing and teaching violin.

I have experience teaching private lessons to violin students as young as 10 as well as to adult students of all ages. I have taught students in Texas, Illinois, Ohio, and Georgia for a total of 12 years. I also have experience coaching chamber music at the Summer Music Camps at Western Illinois University in the Summer of 2002. I have performed with many orchestras in many states, including the Ludwig Symphony Orchestra in the Atlanta area (as Principal 2nd Violinist), the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra in the Newport, KY/Cincinnati, OH area, the Clermont Philharmonic Orchestra in the Cincinnati, OH area, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in Lubbock, TX, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra in Galesburg, IL (as Principal 2nd Violinist), the Peoria Symphony Orchestra in Peoria, IL, the orchestras of CCM in Cincinnati, OH, the WIU Symphony Orchestra (as Concertmaster), and in the National Festival Orchestra under Lukas Foss in 2001 and 2000 (as Assistant Principal 2nd Violinist) at Carnegie hall in New York, NY. I have performed in masterclasses for Sally O'Reilly of the University of Minnesota, and Guillermo Figueroa of the Figueroa Music and Arts Project and founding member and former concertmaster of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, I performed as soloist with the Lubbock Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2001.

At Georgia State University, my courses in Linguistics have included Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Language, Second Language Acquisition, Foundations of Second Language Teaching, two semesters of Teaching English as a Foreign Language including practicum, English Grammar in Use, Phonetics and Phonology, Language in Society (Sociolinguistics), Intercultural Communication, and Communication Across Cultures. I took 2 years of college French and three years of high school French (and earned all A's!) and am qualified to teach beginner to intermediate French students.

I scored in the 95th percentile on my SAT, have a 3.61 GPA and have never received a grade lower than a B in college.

I believe in a student focused teaching philosophy. I am a median, a guide, or a bridge between your current state and your desired goal. I am not formulaic and prefer to set up a plan individually with each new student to try to address individual learning preferences and styles while ensuring a steady progress toward the desired goal.
