About Robert

Hello my name is Robert, and I am a student at Texas Tech University, I have been tutoring for 4 years now. I am currently a senior studying biology and chemistry with the intention of attending graduate school for cell and molecular biology or biotechnology. I want to do research on what is collectively known as parasites and their ability to alter host gene expression for application in both research and drug discovery. Prior to attending Texas tech, I worked as an EMT in both clinical and emergency settings.

I offer academic tutoring in the following subjects: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, molecular biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, anatomy, pathophysiology, physiology, abnormal psychology, neurobiology, zoology, nutrition, statistics, NREMT exam prep for Basic/Intermediate to Paramedic/Advanced, Paramedic and Nursing Cardiology, and pretty much any other related courses.

I use methods such as practice tests, concept mapping, and video tutorials if necessary. Most students are unaware of how many resources there are online for them to use in their classes such as online lectures, flashcards, games, etc.

It is my personal belief that anyone can learn and master anything, no matter their starting point or natural ability. Anecdotally speaking, 9/10 students I have worked with have no serious issues with learning. They were simply never taught how to study.

In my tutoring sessions, I teach two things. The first is the information itself and the intuitive understanding behind said material, and the second is how to take a large amount of complicated, disorganized information and break it down into small, useful, easy-to-follow sets of ideas that lead from point-to-point emphasizing the bigger picture as well as abstract application.

The most effective way of doing this is by using both concept mapping and practice exams; my tutoring sessions rely very heavily on these practices. I find that it generally takes 1-2 two-hour tutoring sessions to cover one chapter's worth of material, given the nature of these subjects.

I will not rush through the sessions, ensuring that we cover all the material. In education, quality trumps quantity. I will not simply explain the bare minimum for students to “pass” their quizzes, exams, courses, and etc. We will not move on to new material until I feel comfortable about a student's understanding of the material.

I will NOT, under any circumstances do online homework, exams, essays, papers, or any other form of academic dishonesty, I feel the need to be upfront about this as I have had problematic situations in the past arise from this misconception.

When I am not teaching and studying, I love to watch college football, hunting, fishing, hiking, video games, and playing guitar.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I've worked at my local university with students who were ADD/ADHD. I've used color coordination and physical involvement for students as well as repetitive statement. I also help students with study habits, distraction assessment, and schedule maintenance.

Chemistry

I have been tutoring in chemistry for three years and its essentialism to my degree has been paramount.

Genetics

I have been tutoring in genetics for almost a year now. As I have been pursing a career in molecular biology, genetics has been essential for me and my career. Like most sciences people underestimate the need for practice, especially with the many equations and "reactions" of DNA and RNA. I offer many many practice questions and resources that many students are unaware of, both in person and online.

Microbiology

I've taught microbiology to both majors and non majors/ nursing students. So I've gotten pretty used to building the material from the ground up and, like all of biology I focus on the bigger picture/ structure and function of everything. I also teach immunology and serology as this has been one of my main areas of research (both come hand in hand with each other )

Organic Chemistry

I have tutored students in organic chemistry for 2 semesters now. I think it's difficult for most because they are unaware of the more mechanical ways of doing reactions/configuration as opposed to trying to mentally flip the molecules in their head, I think the best and the ONLY way to do well in any chemistry course as well as ochem is to practice practice and practice. There is no substitute for that, therefore the majority of my sessions are based on this principle

Study Skills

As noted in all my previous tutoring subjects I am very interested in quantifying the extent to which various pedagogical techniques work to improve not only comprehension but mastery as well. Most of these techniques tend to be practice tests, concept mapping, flash cards, comprehensive questioning, and essay writing. Theses are all active learning techniques and require both understanding of larger and smaller pictures at the conceptual level.

The most intelligent / naturally caring tutor i've ever had!

When meeting Robert (10 minutes early), he began by asking questions to see where I was in the course. After gaining an assessment of what I knew, we dove into my test review, to which i knew absolutely nothing. After just 2 hours i was able to complete my entire chemistry test review and then some. He makes the material easy to understand, by teaching complex subject manner in a simplified way. I
