I have a BA in English Literature and Language from Texas Tech University and an MA in Education Administration from the University of Texas in Austin. I have been in education for 20 years, with the majority of it in the English classroom, in grades 7-12, plus I taught English Composition at Texas Tech while working towards my master's in English. I was also a high school administrator, as an assistant principal and as a campus principal. I chose not to teach this year, to take some time off, but now I am ready to return to work part-time.
I have always had a passion for struggling students; they kept me involved and interested in education. So, tutoring seems like a natural fit for me. I love helping students overcome hurdles with learning. Being able to be part of the moment when a student has a breakthrough is the most amazing part of teaching. Helping a student in a one-on-one situation is extremely rewarding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have prepped students for SAT and ACT, as well as mandatory state testing for over twenty years. I have taught English from 7th grade through college Freshman Composition, while working on my master's in English, with most of my experience in high school classrooms.

I have always taught at very culturally diverse schools, with large populations of newly immigrated students. I am familiar and comfortable with teaching techniques designed to increase fluency in speaking, listening, comprehension, and writing in academic English. I have successfully prepared over 100 students to pass state assessments after a relatively short period of time In working with students.
