Bio

I started my teaching career in 2000. For almost two years, I worked in the third and first grade levels. I then changed to the middle school environment as a special education teacher. I did some direct-teach classes for learning disabled students in the areas of English and Math. I've worked at helping students with other subjects under different duties as an SE teacher. I also had a two-year period of teaching sixth-grade science.

I enjoy working in small group or one-to-one settings because I'm able to focus my attention to the individual student(s) without the distraction of a large class of students. Students are also comfortable with me and my teaching style as I try to bring out what it is that they need to understand about that lesson. I ask questions and review with the student the lesson at hand to help that student's understanding so that he or she can be successful in their learning.

I have an Elementary 1-6 teaching certificate and a Generic Special Education 1-12 Certificate. I'm good at all levels of general math taught in elementary and middle school.

I have not gone through an official phonics training, but I have been in classes over my own educational experiences that have given me a basic understanding of how phonics works. I do know the sounds of the letters. When I taught first grade, the school used an SRA textbook that focused on phonics as the basis for reading instruction.

I hope I've given you a basis of who I am and my qualifications for being able to teach and tutor you in these levels of the educational spectrum. I look forward to being able to help you in whatever subject areas that you might need help in so that you can achieve success in your learning.

Elementary Math

My math experience comes from teaching nearly two years in the elementary setting and fourteen years in middle school with both regular and special education students. I did pass the test that Wyzant gives for its math qualification, too.

I've spoken only English my entire life. My own education taught me about the sounds of the letters, blends and digraphs. When I taught first grade, the school used an SRA textbook that focused on phonics as its training the students in learning how to read. As I worked in various teaching duties throughout middle school, I frequently had to help our bilingual students with their pronunciation and/or spelling to aid in their reading the various textbooks.
